Earthwatch is looking to recruit a Community Engagement Co-ordinator to inspire and support community-led action for wildlife, as part of our Naturehood project, which is supported by the National Lottery Reaching Communities Fund. Working in Oxford, with a specific focus on Wood Farm, Barton, Risinghurst, Sandhills and Rosehill, the role will focus on connecting with three priority audiences:
- Younger people (Aged 16-24).
- People from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.
- People from more disadvantaged communities (20% most deprived nationally).
Earthwatch’s Naturehood project in Oxford works with communities to improve spaces for people and wildlife. The main aim of the role will be to work closely with existing community networks and local organisations, including our partner Oxford Hub, to create community-scale approaches that address the priorities each individual neighbourhood has identified, provide community ownership and bring people together through collective action for local biodiversity.
The ideal candidate will be approachable, organised and a strong communicator. You will have some experience and knowledge of community engagement including developing and supporting community events and activities. You could be at the start of your community or environment career, and gained your experience within the community or in a voluntary role.
As our priority audiences for this work are younger people, people from Black and Minority Ethnic communities, and people living in more disadvantaged communities, and we will particularly welcome applications from within these groups.
Due to the nature of this work, a DBS check will be required.

What will the role involve:
- Working with the Senior Engagement and Learning Manager to develop an engagement plan for Naturehood in Oxford. In partnership with local communities, and using existing Naturehood tools and resources, co-create and deliver a programme of engagement events and activities to support our priority audiences to connect with their local wildlife, and to share their experiences and enthusiasm with others in their community.
- Actively seeking out our priority audiences to better understand what barriers exist to engaging with nature and to get a clearer understanding of what a Naturehood community might mean for them.
- Seeking out and building positive relationships with existing community groups, local activists, leaders and representatives to share project objectives, support the creation of Naturehood groups within our priority audiences, enhance project reach, and add value to other local projects and initiatives
- Supporting existing community leaders in our Naturehood Leaders Network to create community action plans, identify priority activities and facilitate peer support within the Network.
- Working closely with Earthwatch and Oxford Hub colleagues to develop and deliver a local school engagement programme.
- Supporting monitoring, reporting and evaluation activity as required, including regular reports for internal and external use, to ensure that project and community engagement outcomes are captured and communicated in line with programme requirements.
- Supporting project fundraising and communications within the delivery area, including collection of case studies and sharing of national and local achievements and outcomes.

REQUIREMENTS - WHAT WILL YOU BRING TO THE ROLE?
Experience & knowledge
- Experience of working with community members and/or community organisations to enable change
- Knowledge of best practice in community engagement, organising and empowerment and understanding of the challenges and barriers to community participation, and barriers to people taking action for nature
- Experience of developing and supporting community activities, events and projects which connect people to their local environmental or community, ideally working with diverse communities, and supporting them to overcome barriers to participation in activities.
- Your experience could be community-based, personal, paid or voluntary. This role could suit someone at the start of their community or environmental career.
- Familiarity with all relevant health and safety and equalities legislation, needed to deliver an inclusive programme of engagement, ensuring the safety of self, participants, and co-workers.
- Approachable, with the ability to build rapport, establish trust and build strong and consistent relationships with diverse audiences
- A commitment and willingness to work with others to co-develop local actions and activities that seek to enhance local communities, their wildlife, and access to nature.
- Commitment to the mission and values of Earthwatch
- Strong communication skills, including maintaining good operational relationships within a dispersed project team, and the ability to produce clear written outputs including reports and case studies.
- Ability to work independently and manage own workload within an overall project plan and programme.
- Excellent organisational skills – able to prioritise and manage a varied workload to tight and competing deadlines.
- Willingness to work flexibly across time and location in order to deliver Naturehood as accessibly as possible within communities.
- Knowledge of issues facing UK wildlife, particularly in an urban setting would be an advantage (demonstrated either through academic qualifications or previous experience).
- Experience of working in schools and/or supervising volunteers
- Your community engagement experience supported by a vocational or other professional qualification
- This is the start of the programme so tasks, role and approach can be developed to the candidates' strengths.
- In order to work in schools and with young people and vulnerable adults in communities, the post-holder will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check.
- The role will involve some evening and weekend working, and also occasional lone working, and the post-holder will be required to comply with appropriate local safeguarding systems to ensure their own safety.
