Major Donor Executive Jobs
We are looking for an experienced fundraiser, to lead on fundraising in the Department of Physics, as part of the friendly team working across the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences (MPLS) Division.
The Department of Physics is one of the top five departments in the world. Our academics observe the wonders of the Universe from the very big to the very small: from seeking planets with the potential for life outside the solar system, to undertaking some of the most delicate experiments in quantum physics. Physics has applications in so many fields, including biology and nanotechnology, to find new ways to treat cancer; the development of new materials to generate green energy; and the understanding of climate science, with its impact on the Earth. The Physics Department is active in developing these applications in part through a strong innovation culture that has created nine new companies since 2018 and with six more in the pipeline for 2024. The Department has a deeply embedded ED&I culture.
About the role:
You will be raising money to support research; to enable students from around the world and from every background to come and study at Oxford; and to help promote the public understanding of Physics. You will work closely with the Head of Physics, as well as some of the most inspiring scientists in the world, and will forge relationships with existing and new donors to the department. While an interest in science is essential, you do not need to be a Physics graduate, just an enthusiast for knowledge.
About you:
You are an experienced development professional with a strong track record of securing major gifts, a confident approach and the ability to think creatively. You will lead on major gift fundraising (£100k-£1m+) working with a range of donors (corporates, trusts and individuals). The department has a well-established alumni programme and a very active and supportive development board that you will work closely with.
What We Offer:
As an employer, we value the wellbeing and development of all our employees. We offer a comprehensive range of benefits, including:
- 38 days annual leave (including public holidays)
- Hybrid working arrangements for a healthy work-life balance
- Extensive personal and professional development opportunities
- Membership to CASE to support your professional development as an educational advancement professional
- Supportive childcare services and other family-friendly leave schemes for working parents, guardians and those with caring responsibilities
- Generous family leave for pregnancy, adoption, paternity, and shared parental leave
- Excellent contributory pension scheme for your financial future
- Salary sacrifice scheme for additional savings
- Subsidised sports centre membership to promote well-being
- Cycle loan scheme to encourage sustainable commuting
- Discounted bus and transit travel
In addition, you will have access to a vibrant community with social groups and sports clubs fostering an inclusive atmosphere.
Application process:
- Click the link to ‘Apply’ and follow the on-screen instructions. You will be taken to our online Applicant portal.
- Applications should consist of a full CV and a letter of application (maximum of 2 pages), in PDF format, outlining your motivations to apply for this role, your relevant experience and how you meet the criteria of the person specification.
Only applications received before 12.00 noon on 8 April 2024 can be considered.
Interviews are currently scheduled to take place week commencing 17 April 2024, in person in Oxford.
Development and Alumni Engagement is committed to having a team that is made up of diverse skills and experiences. We encourage applicants from all sectors of the community and are especially keen to encourage candidates from under-represented groups to apply

We unlock potential, broaden horizons and create opportunities with and for ambitious young people who face structural barriers in education and work because of their socioeconomic background (where they grew up, went to school or the occupation of their parents or guardians).
We do this by:
- Directly supporting young people; we nurture the knowledge, confidence and networks of high-achieving young people through our programmes.
- Influencing employers; we influence employers to ensure people with potential can get in and get on in professional life.
- Advocating for social mobility; we campaign on structural social mobility issues and amplify the voices of young people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
About the role
The SMF has just agreed a new three-year strategy with bold ambitions to develop our programmes to have more impact on more young people, and to increase our influence on the systemic barriers to social mobility. As our Head of Partnerships & Income Development you will own the development and delivery of our income generation strategy so that we can build the partnerships and secure the resources we need to meet these ambitions.
You will primarily be accountable for overseeing and developing our impressive portfolio of corporate funding relationships and partnerships, through which we deliver on our strategic priorities and generate most of our income – currently £3m annually. You will also lead the development of our other income streams including trusts and foundations, events, earned income, and pro bono partnerships.
As a valued member of the senior management team, you will work closely with the board, Chief Executive and senior leadership colleagues to shape and deliver our strategy and business plan and develop our charity and our people.
Commercially minded and experienced at building and stewarding strong, mutually beneficial partnerships, the successful candidate will be an inspiring leader who can empower their team to be creative, proactive and tenacious and leverage our networks of support. You will be passionate about providing access and opportunity for young people across the UK, capable of working at the very highest level, and excited by the personal professional growth this role and the organisation could offer you.

SINCE 9/11 are seeking a dynamic and driven leader to manage the charity through its next phase of development.
The Charity Director will be responsible for managing the charity on a day to day basis throughout its next phase of development: developing and implementing the strategy for the organisation, building its capability to deliver this strategy through fundraising activities and putting in place a small team; driving awareness of the SINCE 9/11 Education Programme among key audiences and overseeing the financial administration of the charity, in line with the goals set out by the charity trustees.
CHARITY DIRECTOR ROLE OVERVIEW
This is an important and exciting time for the charity. More than 20 years after the horrific events of 9/11, with our acclaimed SINCE 9/11 education programmes for schools (developed by the world no.1 UCL Institute of Education) and our strategy and vision for the future both now in place, we want to drive the charity even further forward.
Our work remains as important as ever, teaching young people across the UK – who weren’t even born in September 2001 – about the events, causes and consequences of 9/11 and subsequent terrorist atrocities.
In a world where extremism and terrorism pose a huge risk, both to life and to the pluralist ideals of democratic societies, SINCE 9/11 seeks to lead the way in educating young people and steering society towards a more peaceful and tolerant future. In order to do so, we are now seeking a talented, driven and engaging leader who can take our charity to the next level. We believe that we have a high-quality programme to take into schools and other settings working with young people; our challenge now is to ensure that our programme reaches as many schools as possible.
We therefore need a leader who is confident and creative in building relationships with schools, academy trusts, local authorities, subject associations and teaching unions; someone who is familiar with the national education environment. Supported by a high-profile and committed board, our new director will be tasked with putting all of their energy into building those relationships and ensuring that we have a step change in the number of young people accessing our programme.
We believe that doing so will bring us long term financial sustainability and thus the ability to grow and develop our programmes further. In the tough operating environment, with schools currently facing many challenges of their own, we know this will be no easy task. The Board will be ready and willing to support you in any way that we can, as we recognise that appointing a dynamic, committed director is crucial to a continuing successful future for SINCE 9/11.
