Job description

Join a fast-growing climate think tank, and help accelerate the end of coal.

We are especially keen to encourage applications from people underrepresented in climate change analysis and campaigning. Climate change is a race issue, a class issue, and a gender issue. We welcome applicants with lived experiences of these issues.

What is Ember?

Ember is an innovative non-profit think tank, using data to accelerate the global electricity transition and the coal phase-out. We track changes in the global power system - and use our findings to seed major shifts in international energy and climate policy. We’ve got a strong track record of influence on a lean budget.  You’ll be joining us at a period of rapid growth, and be part of a Asian and European team that’s having a real impact on the end of coal power.

What’s the role?

As the organisation expands in Asia and Europe, half your time will be spent supporting our Head of Communications with her media and communications work, and half will be providing administrative support to the COO and two department leads. You’ll be helping both to keep the organisation running smoothly, and to get our research in front of more changemakers.

Key responsibilities

Support the Head of Communications with:

  • Scheduling social media content and advertising (using Hootsuite, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube)

  • Updating and maintaining the Ember website (using Wordpress)

  • Creating engaging visual and video content

  • Researching new outreach opportunities for Ember (such as podcasts, events, awards)

  • Collecting evaluation metrics (using Google Analytics and media evaluation tools)

  • Maintaining a database of contacts, including press and key stakeholders.

Support the COO with:

  • HR, including induction of new staff and regular performance reviews

  • Accounts and expenses

  • Aiding with further recruitment

  • Grant reports and new fundraising bids

  • Designing a new way to quantify the emissions reduction impact of projects

  • Supporting the development of an impact report and fundraising portfolio

Must have

  • A passion for tackling climate change

  • At least 2 years experience in an administrative or communications capacity

  • Good organisational skills and ability to balance multiple tasks independently

  • Commitment to learning new skills, particularly digital technologies

  • Attention to detail, reliably completing tasks to a high standard

Nice to have

  • European or Asian language skills

  • Experience with social media and tools like Hootsuite

  • Experience with a CMS (especially Wordpress)

  • Knowledge of energy and climate

Salary: £22k-£25k, depending on experience.

Location: Right to work in the UK required (we are currently remote working, but some of the team intend to return to our offices in London and Brighton post-vaccine :)

Ember’s history: For over a decade we’ve worked on climate policy in Europe as Sandbag, winning reform to the EU CO2-pricing market, and a succession of wins on coal phase-outs in Europe. We’re now rebranded as Ember as we take the fight against coal global. We turn data into action: we gather, curate and analyse data on the global coal to clean transition.

Holiday and Pension

  • 25 days holiday (excluding Bank Holidays)

    • Plus additional time off between Christmas and New Year

    • For each year that you’re part of the team at Ember you’ll receive an additional 1 day of holiday, up to a maximum of 5 additional days.

  • A pension plan with employer contribution of 3%

  • Flexible working conditions, including the opportunity for part-time work and home working

Further benefits

  • Office (when we return!) includes free breakfasts, free yoga, once-a-week beer & pizza

  • Season Ticket Loan

  • Free annual eye tests

  • Funding and allocated time for your training and development

  • Volunteer Day (e.g. team tree-planting)

  • Time-off to donate blood

Applying: Please send a CV & 1 page Cover Letter addressed to Phil MacDonald. In the cover letter, please include ~200 words on why coal is the priority for climate change, written to convince MEPs. Please also include your earliest start date.

Applications will close midnight on Sunday 3rd January 2020.

Interviews are scheduled for the 7th and 8th January.
