About Epping Forest Foodbank 

Epping Forest Foodbank (EFFB) is a charitable incorporated organisation providing emergency food parcels to local people in the Epping Forest area experiencing temporary financial crises. It was founded by local churches on Christian principles and this is reflected in its ethos and values. EFFB currently has 4 distribution centres, and rents a warehouse in Loughton for storage and office space. 

In 2020-2021 EFFB handled over 1,200 referrals from referral agencies in the local area, providing emergency food for over 3,000 people. This was a 75% increase on the previous year. In addition to providing food, EFFB is committed to signposting people in crisis to relevant support according to their circumstances. EFFB currently has over 100 volunteers. 

In order to alleviate hunger and effectively support local people, EFFB works in partnership with many local agencies and also benefits from operating as part of the wider Trussell Trust network.


Overview of role

  • Overseeing the day-to-day operations of EFFB

  • Coordinating the recruitment and management of volunteers

  • Managing and developing relationships with relevant organisations 

  • Encourage engagement within the local community with EFFB

  • Monitor operational standards within EFF

  • Encourage the development of the Christian ethos of EFFB


Duties of job role

Overseeing the day-to-day operations of EFFB

  • Ensure operations of EFFB are effective, in line with the EFFB ethos and values and meet user demand

  • Oversee stock-levels of food and ensure distribution centres receive what they need for EFFB users 

  • Monitor the EFFB referral system and liaise with the Trussell Trust where necessary 

  • Support the EFFB Director in implementing the Pathfinder programme

  • Lead in procuring necessary resources for EFFB


Coordinating the recruitment and management of volunteers 

  • Oversee volunteer recruitment, training and development 

  • Oversee volunteer rotas and management 

  • Manage key volunteers, including distribution centre and warehouse coordinators 

  • Review and develop volunteer policies and ensure compliance by volunteers


Managing and developing relationships with relevant organisations 

  • Manage relationships with referral agencies and local food providers and identify new ones

  • Manage the relationship with the warehouse landlord and distribution centre premises owners 

  • Manage relationships with organisations EFFB users can be signposted on to


Encourage engagement within the local community with EFFB 

  • Lead activities to encourage engagement within the local community 

  • Support the Director in promoting EFFB on the website and social media 

  • Respond to enquiries to EFFB 

  • Ensure EFFB’s reputation is upheld with users, volunteers and among the local community 


Monitor operational standards within EFFB 

  • Regularly attend the EFFB distribution centres and warehouse 

  • Ensure health & safety, safeguarding, data protection and other regulatory standards are maintained within EFFB and identify necessary improvements 

  • Ensure regular and accurate data is kept of stock and referrals

  • Develop resources for signposting EFFB users and keep up-to-date


Encourage the development of the Christian ethos of EFFB

  • Lead regular prayer among staff and volunteers 

  • Encourage volunteers to be open about their faith and sensitively share their faith with foodbank users where appropriate


Personal skills 


  • Experience of managing people

  • Experience of working with those affected by poverty and/or food insecurity 

  • Experience of working or volunteering in an organisation that deploys volunteers 


  • Excellent organisation and administrative skills, including the ability to prioritise tasks and manage competing demands

  • Able to work as part of a team and motivate others about a project 

  • Confident oral communication, including in front of larger groups of people and in a one-to-one setting 

  • Excellent written communication skills

  • Competent using Microsoft Office, Google applications, email, internet and social media

  • Driver with use of a car

Personal requirements

  • Ability to take initiative and problem solve

  • Ability to work under pressure and deal with challenges calmly 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to speak appropriately to all types of people

  • Ability to be flexible with work hours and type


  • Passionate about tackling poverty and food insecurity
