**This role will be temporarily remote whilst we plan our return to our Marylebone offices.**

Equal Education is a social enterprise with the aim of improving educational outcomes for the most underachieving students in our society - those who are in our care system and those with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities). We work with hundreds of qualified teachers to provide academic, subject specialised and individual tutoring for children who are looked after and those with SEND. 

Our success relies upon a strong operating foundation and people who are motivated by a strong desire to make an impact in the lives of those whose current needs are not being met by the education system. 

As a growing organisation, we have ambitious plans for the future. We work throughout England and Wales, and are poised to create the world’s largest education programme for children in care in the West Midlands, UK. We propose to work with thousands of children over the coming 6 years.

Our core team is still small, formed of the two co-founders and 11 operations staff. With a lot of growth expected in the space of the coming months, we plan to expand our team this year. 

The role 

The most ambitious organisations won’t make much progress without an organised and well-led operations team to help support our clients and tutors. We are therefore looking for a Finance officer with a passion for keeping our finances organised to help ensure we are kept on track, and set the foundations for sustained growth. The role comes with plenty of responsibility, along with the opportunity to progress. 

What will you actually be doing? 

The role is part of the next phase of scaling Equal Education, as we have progressively increased the number of children and teachers we work with. The role includes taking some of the financial responsibility from the founders to ensure we maintain and build on our quality of provision and outcomes. You will be overseeing our excellent processes to ensure we function and remain compliant 

You will work with the team to ensure that we continuously provide quality education to an increasing number of children. You will be responsible for implementing the right processes and practices across the organisation. You will make decisions specific to certain cases and find compromises which are aligned to our values. You will be organising and reporting to our Directors and Associate Directors to help them make good decision to scale our impact by leveraging our finances.


Hours: Full time, 37.5 hours a week.

Salary: Annual salary £26-£32k - If part qualified there is scope to pay for exams, with time off for exams and study.

Accountable to: CEO and Co-founders 

Key roles and responsibilities:

  • Monitor day-to-day bookkeeping and financial operations within the organisation such as payroll, invoicing, staff expenses, and other transactions

  • Maintain day-to-day records and processes, including recording income and expenditure 

  • Organise financial records according to grants and contracts won

  • Produce monthly reports and discuss with Directors and leadership team 

  • Managing tutor finance queries and payments

  • Credit control

  • Provide financial support and training to internal staff when required

  • Work with Directors in preparing annual budgets and forecasts 

  • Liaise with external investment partners on monitoring progress towards targets 

  • Maintain oversight of CRM (salesforce transition in September 2021)

  • Manage financial controls and financial systems

  • Prepare monthly payment runs

  • Perform bank reconciliations

  • Prepare / support preparation of the year end accounts

  • Prepare and post accounting adjustments



  • Thorough understanding of financial and management accounting principles 

  • Attention to detail and the ability to query when necessary

  • Strong communication, organisation and prioritisation skills

  • Ability to meet deadlines and deliver accurate and timely information

  • Team player and works well collaboratively

  • Aligns with Equal Education’s mission and role as a social enterprise

  • Good spreadsheet skills

  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders


  • Recognised professional financial qualification

  • Knowledge of Xero and other online accounting systems
