As the Head of Finance at SAINT, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the financial health and sustainability of the church. Reporting into the Chief Executive Officer and the Honorary Treasurers, you will focus on the full accounting process and delivery of financial guidance for the parishes, and other related charities.
The organisation:
SAINT is one church with multiple Church of England parishes, across East London, which work together in collaboration. The four parishes that make up SAINT are: the Parish of Hackney, the Parish of St Mary with St Edward and St Luke Leyton, the Parish of St Leonard Shoreditch and the Parish of West Ham. We have been commissioned as a resource church to serve young people, train diverse leaders and plant churches in partnership with a network of friends.
The Head of Finance role is a permanent, full-time position with an opportunity for a hybrid working arrangement. The successful candidate will work at least 2 days per week on site with the flexibility to work remotely. The church offices are in a new, light-filled building next to the St. John at Hackney Church. You will be working alongside a closely integrated team of 40 staff and clergy, all with exceptional skills within their ministries.
The key duties of this Head of Finance role are as follows:
- Work with Pastoral Leads to help develop and execute the financial strategy supporting SAINT's mission and goals.
- Conduct financial analysis to support decision-making and advise on financial strategies.
- Prepare consolidated accounts for the entire church group, combining financial data from all churches and entities under SAINT.
- Facilitate annual audits, including liaising with external auditors and providing required documentation.
- Prepare, analyse and distribute monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with UK accounting standards.
- Ensure compliance with UK accounting and financial regulations, including charity reporting requirements and VAT.
- Work with the Finance Manager to develop and monitor budgets and identify areas for cost optimisation.
- Engage in the life of the Church to develop and maintain positive staff relationships, the organisational culture and connections with the congregation and community.
The successful candidate will have:
- Qualified as an Accountant with professional body membership (ACCA, ACA, or equivalent).
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant accounting and financial management experience.
- Experience of producing statutory accounts, management accounts, cash flow forecasts, budgets and other financial reports.
- Knowledge of UK charity accounting and reporting regulations is an advantage.
- Excellent attention to detail, organisational skills, and the ability to meet deadlines.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
As a result of our Christian ethos, this post is covered by an Occupational Requirement under Part 1 of Schedule 9 to the Equality Act 2010. Key Responsibilities
Recruitment
- Build a strategy for attracting high performing talent into Resurgo and our partner Spear centres, in line with our goals for national growth and ensuring our teams reflect the communities they serve.
- Oversee the recruitment and selection process across Resurgo and our partner Spear centres (with support from the HR Executive), working with the D&I Manager to train team members on interview skills, and advising and guiding Department Heads through the recruitment process
- Work with the Head of Church Partnerships to develop the Spear Graduate Scheme as a training programme of choice, ensuring there is a pipeline of outstanding coaches for our partner Spear centres and managing the recruitment cycle throughout the year
- Manage the outward face of Resurgo recruitment and profile raising to potential employees including building a strategy on recruitment relationships, and networking with potential referral organisations, attending careers fairs and other events
Progression and Organisational Development
- Work with the Director of PCO to conduct job analysis across Resurgo to understand current and future job needs to meet organisational goals, and succession planning for key roles
- Work with the Director of PCO and Head of Church Partnerships on staff progression planning and talent retention strategies, as well as advising on individual performance management issues, supporting line managers to develop and grow both highly performing and underperforming team members
Learning and Development
- Design a learning and development strategy across all teams at Resurgo, ensuring we grow and develop talented employees both for their current roles, and enabling them to progress within the organization
- Research and consult on potential training options for individuals and teams as needed, working with Heads of Department to identify key learning needs and either develop learning offers to meet those needs or source relevant and high impact external training, for both hard and soft skills

Key Responsibilities
Partnership liaison and relationship management
· Establish the primary local referral agencies and build and implement a strategy for developing relationships with them to ensure recruitment of young people onto the Spear programme is effective
· Maintain and develop relationships with local partners to form a strong referral network.
Oversight of Spear Programme
· As a confident communicator, you will lead group sessions of around 10 young people each, using coaching skills to transform attitudes to their own ability and the workplace, and to raise their awareness and maximise potential in stepping into the world of work
· Prepare and coach group and 1-1 sessions with the Spear Coach
· Ensure the programme is delivered in line with agreed targets, and report KPIs on recruitment, retention and completion of Spear Trainees to Resurgo and the Spear Trust, as well as their ongoing progress and sustainment of work or education.
Line Management and training
· Manage the Spear Coach, using a coaching approach to invest in their growth and development
· Be line managed by Resurgo to support with the set-up and ongoing operations of the centre and report back on KPIs.
Church Community
· The Spear Centre Manager is directly employed by HTH Church, meaning you are part of a vibrant church staff team and submerged in an exciting faith community
· You will be required to establish strong relationships with key people at the church to ensure the engagement and backing of church members and help the Spear Coach to establish a strong presence at the church to build a network of supporters for the Spear programme
· Ensure the Spear programme is a key missional feature of the work of the church; this may involve attending church events and speaking at services.
Site management and set-up
· Work with the Church to set up the training room and IT infrastructure for the new Spear Centre in advance of opening
· Liaise with relevant staff locally on-site issues and work to resolve them as soon as possible, ensuring the office and training room are safe and tidy working spaces in line with health and safety policies.
