Every six minutes in the UK someone loses their sight and by 2050 an estimated four million people will be living with sight loss and blindness. Fight for Sight is the UK’s leading eye research charity at the forefront of pioneering research to stop sight loss. The charity currently has a commitment to research of £8m at over 49 UK universities and hospitals. With significant developments in the areas of gene-therapy, stem cells, drug therapies, the use of artificial intelligence and other technologies, the pace of change has never been so rapid.

Research is at the heart of all that we do and we’re now searching for an outstanding person to join our team as our new Director of Research, Policy and Innovation. Our ambition is to capitalise on our progress by significantly raising our profile and income to ensure that we can stop sight loss sooner. Our new Director will play a crucial part in this progress, ensuring our investment in research has maximum impact and working to increase investment and innovation in sight loss research across the organisation and with our partners.

This is a critical role for us and we are seeking a strategic leader who can drive our research strategy for the benefit of all those who are or may be affected by sight loss. You will be a valued member of our senior leadership team contributing to the future direction of the whole charity as we embark on a new phase.  It goes without saying that you will have a strong scientific background, although experience of the sight loss sector is not essential. You will also be an experienced senior leader, used to leading and motivating teams and contributing towards organisational strategy. You will bring a strong track record of delivering research strategies which deliver genuine impact and you will be a credible leader, comfortable with communicating complex scientific messages in an inspiring and motivational way. We are leveraging our position on a national and international stage and you will be a key member of our team driving this work forward.

We are excited about our future and the impact that we know we can create and you will share this ambition. Our research strategy embraces innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration and these will be core to your approach. This role requires someone with outstanding relationship building and influencing skills to engage and influence right across our organisation, contributing to our wider fundraising and communications strategy, meeting major donors and engaging with the media as well as supporting our committed staff and dedicated Board of Trustees as well as the research community.

We know our life-changing research can make a real difference to the lives of everyone affected by sight loss. If this is a mission that you would like to be part of, we would love to hear from you.
