The Role
To help us fulfill our mission, we seek Grants Officers, who will oversee complex strategic grantmaking activity, triage, monitoring and compliance, and clearance of conflicts of interest, sanctions, and data privacy. They will also support with managing urgent leadership directed grants where necessary.
Key Responsibilities
As Grants Officer, you will report to the Associate Director, Grants Management and be responsible for:
- Contributing to annual planning for US-based entities, forecasting resource allocation needs throughout the year.
- Leading grant closeout procedures, overseeing the collection of overdue reports for all grants funded by US-based entities, conducting FPR, OSI, OSPC processes. Manage the completion of the Grant Closure Project, identifying obstacles to report collection and establishing standard procedures for closing grants, including those for US-based funded programmatic units.
- Coordinating with Finance, Accounting & Compliance teams for audits of Open Society's US-based entities, as well as the preparation of annual tax filings and financial statements.
- Managing departmental budget, retreat/meeting schedules, and professional development opportunities.
- Conducting pre-award/post-award due diligence to ensure grants align with US-based entities' funding requirements and foundation policies.
- Facilitating internal audits for the Grants Management department.
- Collaborating with opportunities/programs colleagues to ensure timely and efficient proposal compliance review, grant award structuring, issuance of grant letters, payments and amendments, and grant closeout reviews.
- Providing comprehensive education and training on grant award compliance, grantmaking processes, Foundation Connect, GrantSmith, and Analytics Studio within the department and to colleagues across Open Society.
- Serving as a resource for Grants Assistants and other Grants Management colleagues, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
- Assisting in Grants Management processes related to equivalency determination, expenditure responsibility, OFAC compliance, COI compliance, and data privacy.
- Ensuring data integrity in the grantmaking system and provide reporting and analysis.
- Monitoring grant payment schedules and program budgets, ensuring financial efficiency.
- Liaising with Communications, Finance, GARA, Information Technology, the Office of General Council, outside organizations, and/or affinity groups on matters of mutual interest.
- Developing, documenting, revising, and implementing Grants Management policies, procedures, documents, templates, and multimedia materials.
- Representing Grants Management in cross-departmental staff meetings, workshops, retreats, and working groups.
- Supporting internal Grants Management operations and contribute to special projects as needed.

Experience
The ideal candidate must have a University Degree (BA or Bsc) and have the following experience and competencies:

- Deep understanding and vision of how grantmaking aligns with programmatic strategy complemented by effective grantmaking practices.

Reporting directly to a dedicated and passionate Chief Executive Officer, and playing a key role within the leadership team, the Director of Finance & Company Secretary role represents an excellent opportunity to create and deliver long term financial strategies that supports the services and causes championed by the Society. We are seeking a collaborative, confident, dynamic and engaging individual who can ensure all statutory requirements are met alongside the continual development of controls to safeguard the Society’s assets.
The Director of Finance will be a first-class communicator who can work in collaboration with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. You will be a strong advocate for a finance team that offers a best-in-class delivery of customer focused financial services. You must enjoy hands-on management and oversee the Head of Finance and the Finance team, ensuring that they continue to provide robust financial governance and control. This will all be conjunction with growing their knowledge and capacity with the Dynamic 365 platform to meet the ever-evolving needs and strategy of the Society. The post holder will also safeguard the financial integrity of the Society, its governance, and ensure it is fully compliant with all statutory requirements. This purpose extends to the Society’s subsidiaries.
This rewarding and varied role will see you will have full participation in the formulation and presentation of the Society’s strategic and operational plans and work closely with the CEO and Board of Trustees to make the British Horse Society the best it can be.
The Society's Head Office is based near Stoneleigh in Warwickshire. Hybrid working is in place with 2-3 days per week required onsite.
Essential Criteria
- Fully Qualified Accountant
- Proven experience at a senior level in a finance role with responsibility across the whole finance function.
- Experience at a senior level as Company Secretary or equivalent
- Experienced in delivering finance system and/or ERP transformation
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to develop team members to their full potential.
- Demonstrated aptitude for strategic thinking, planning and analysis.
- Excellent financial planning, annual budgeting and forecasting skills
Desirable Criteria
- Charity sector experience particularly the nature of unrestricted, designated and restricted funds, VAT Partial Exemption, Gift Aid and the Charity SORP
- An understanding of education and qualification regulation and compliance
- Experience of Microsoft Dynamics Business Central

About the Role
The Chief Executive Officer will have as their overarching purpose the realisation of the mission of the charity; to provide disadvantaged young people with the guidance, networks and opportunities they need to realise their potential at school and achieve post-16 qualifications that build towards secure, fulfilling employment.

This position is responsible for the full finance function and responsibilities include:
- Overall responsibility for the development and successful delivery of the Finance function;
- Leading on financial planning, preparing annual budgets and quarterly management accounts;
- Preparing year end SORP accounts and liaising with the auditors; producing the Annual Report and Financial Statements; reporting to Finance, Audit and Risk Committee, Investment Committee and the Board of Trustees;

- Communicating complex financial information and influencing and building rapport with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
The successful candidate will be a qualified accountant with experience of the UK charity or not for profit sector, advanced knowledge of SORP and charity VAT. You will have led a strategic finance function, produced statutory accounts, management accounts, financial reports and analysis. You will have demonstrable commercial acumen, a strong understanding of business and strategic issues, and the ability to appropriately challenge and advise budget holders. You will have excellent communication skills and a passion for helping us achieve our vision.

- Collaborating in the construction, maintenance, and assessment of grantmaking portfolios, as well as in the design of portfolio strategies.

About the role:
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and versatile finance professional to play a leading strategic role in the continuing development of our North London schools.
The Regional Finance Director will provide the overall leadership and management for all aspects of finance to Ark Schools in the North London region. The role will be focussed on ensuring processes are embedded across all schools; supporting schools new to the network (or with new staff structures) with transition as well as leading, with regard to finance, on strategic projects within the schools.

Key Responsibilities:
- To be a member of the Ark Central Finance Team, ensuring that the network financial strategies and processes are being carried out at all North London schools, including those planning to join the network
- To be responsible for all aspects of finance at the academies and developing the in-school finance teams to provide a high-level service to their principals and operations leads
- To assist with finance requirements for transitioning new schools to the network, including systems set-up, staff training and implementation of policies & procedures
- To be responsible directly to the Schools Finance Director for the strategic financial management in all schools in the region
- To control, monitor and evaluate the academies’ finances, ensuring compliance with financial requirements and value for money
- To be responsible for salary forecasts, preparing annual plans of the regions’ priorities in consultation with the Principals and Regional Director, and the annual budgets for approval by Ark Central and review by the Local Governing Bodies
- To be responsible for managing financial inspections by internal and external audit and other bodies and ensure action is taken on any recommendations made
- To ensure that effective credit controls are in place in respect of income, i.e. catering, lettings, etc.
- To work with the HR Business Partner to oversee all matters relating to payroll, including Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs queries, National Insurance, benefits in lieu of pay (travel loans etc.), Give as You Earn scheme, and to ensure that appropriate controls are in place and robust checks are made in relation to the monthly payroll however noting that the administration or payroll and pensions is outsourced and led by HR.
Key Requirements:
· Professional accountancy qualification, including significant post-qualifying experience
· A record of Continuing Professional Development activities
· Experience and/or knowledge of schools or education finance & administration would be desirable, but not essential
· Knowledge and experience of financial management systems and processes
· Experience of strategic financial planning and supporting decision-making
· Experience of preparing and presenting financial reports and presentations for various stakeholders
· Ability to ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times
· Ability to interpret complex legislation regulations
· Ability to prioritise and manage conflicting demands
· Strong organisational, project management and planning skills

HBLB is an Arm’s Length Body of Government, responsible to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Unlike some NDPBs, HBLB receives no central Government grant-in-aid and no National Lottery funding. Instead, it is required by the Act to collect a statutory levy from the horseracing business of bookmakers (c.£100 million p.a.). HBLB applies those Levy funds to a wide range of schemes in direct support of horseracing and in line with statutory objectives:
- The improvement of breeds of horses

The Financial Controller (FC) will report to and work closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) leading the Finance Team with line management responsibility for all four members. This team is highly competent, reliable, and experienced in what they do. The Financial Controller has responsibility for leading activity across the team, driving high levels of professionalism, integrity and continuous improvement in designing and running effective and efficient operational activity and analysis.
The key responsibilities of the Financial Controller will be:
- Assist the CFO in developing and maintaining a framework of performance and risk management including the HBLB three-year business plan.
- Manage and control the framework of bank accounts including assisting the CFO in decision-making on all treasury matters.
- Lead on the maintenance of an accurate, rolling, three-year forward look financial model.
- Assist the CFO and Chief Executive with all Board papers as required
- Lead the process for opening and running HBLB Loan windows for applications as to timing and affordability including convening the Investment Committee.
- Lead the relationship with the National Audit Office (external auditors), coordinating all visits and enquiries, liaising with the NAO throughout the year to effectively plan necessary activity and the annual audit. Anticipate or proactively address issues as they arise.
- Coordinate the issuing of new Levy Guidance Notes and annual Levy Assessments, including reviewing the Levy paperwork to match any statutory updates and making changes.
- Assure the monthly payroll process and act as the business continuity process manager for the preparation of payroll and pension submissions in case of the FM being unavailable.
The successful candidate will have:
- You must be ACCA, CIMA or ACA fully qualified with at least three years’ PQE.
- You will have led a team or teams during your career
- You will have experience of managing budgets and forecasts, dealing with external stakeholders (such as internal and external audit), and have been involved in risk management and performance management.
- Practical experience of IFRS accounting standards and ideally public sector Annual Accounts and Report production.
- Ideally you will have experience of working in both the private sector and public sector.
