You must enjoy hands-on management and oversee the Head of Finance and the Finance team, ensuring that they continue to provide robust financial governance and control. This will all be conjunction with growing their knowledge and capacity with the Dynamic 365 platform to meet the ever-evolving needs and strategy of the Society. The post holder will also safeguard the financial integrity of the Society, its governance, and ensure it is fully compliant with all statutory requirements. This purpose extends to the Society’s subsidiaries.
This rewarding and varied role will see you will have full participation in the formulation and presentation of the Society’s strategic and operational plans and work closely with the CEO and Board of Trustees to make the British Horse Society the best it can be.
The Society's Head Office is based near Stoneleigh in Warwickshire. Hybrid working is in place with 2-3 days per week required onsite.
Essential Criteria
- Fully Qualified Accountant
- Proven experience at a senior level in a finance role with responsibility across the whole finance function.
- Experience at a senior level as Company Secretary or equivalent
- Experienced in delivering finance system and/or ERP transformation
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to develop team members to their full potential.
- Demonstrated aptitude for strategic thinking, planning and analysis.
- Excellent financial planning, annual budgeting and forecasting skills
Desirable Criteria
- Charity sector experience particularly the nature of unrestricted, designated and restricted funds, VAT Partial Exemption, Gift Aid and the Charity SORP

This post is responsible for ensuring the financial health of the Spiritualists National Union, offering advice to the trustees on the National Executive Committee on financial planning and managing and monitoring the budget, helping them to make sound decisions to meet the charity’s objects.

We are working in Partnership with Human Appeal (HA) who are seeking to appoint a Director of Finance to provide strategic and financial guidance, ensuring that the organisation’s financial commitments are met, including developing all necessary policies and procedures to ensure sound financial management and control.
The new Director of Finance will manage the day-to-day operations of the Finance department, while helping to drive business success, providing the financial insights that lead to better commercial decisions for both the UK, and their global offices. A key aspect of the role will be to establish strategies to increase income with a view to the stability of HA’s finances, along with its long-term financial health and growth.
You will:
- Be degree-educated in a relevant finance discipline and a Qualified Accountant (ACA; ACCA; CIMA).
- Demonstrate significant senior-level financial leadership, management and oversight experience.
- Have experience with, or exposure to, the not-for-profit or public sector.
- Have experience with, or exposure to, financial management in developing countries.
- Be an experienced user of the MS Office Suite, financial databases and systems. Previous experience using Salesforce, SAGE, and NAVision is desirable.
- Be fluent in written and spoken English (essential). Additional languages such as Arabic and Urdu are desirable.

Our partner, a humanitarian organisation, has programmes focussing on peacebuilding initiatives, improved quality of and access to education and the opportunity to earn livelihoods. They are seeking an experienced Country Finance Manager for their growing programme in CAR.
Responsibilities
- Provide full financial oversight of the operations in CAR, covering the main office in Bangui and field operations, ensuring that these are properly compliant with local tax & other regulatory requirements.
- Develop, strengthen and implement strong controls, processes and policies in all the offices, ensuring that staff understand these and offer coaching on them as required.
- Lead on the financial accounting and reporting, including the year-end accounts and audit preparation.
- Lead on country financial management, including preparation of management accounts, analysis, developing the organisational budget and cashflow forecasts and re-forecasts.
- Lead on full cycle grants management, including cost recovery, donor compliance, management & reporting, and preparing for donor audits.
- Provide oversight on HR, including ensuring compliance to the local laws & requirements, developing staff policies, and managing staff growth.
- Provide oversight on procurement.
Requirements
- Qualified accountant, or experienced accountant with an accounting/finance degree, with at least 5 years of experience leading the finance function of a growing INGO working in a complex/fragile state.
- Strong experience of developing controls, policies and processes in a complex/fragile state, and in an organisation with HQ and field operations.
- Strong grants management & compliance experience – specifically of institutional grants, including government grants as well as UN agency funding.
- Experience in procurement, HR & administration.
- Strong systems skills (ERP) and advanced MSExcel skills.
- Developed organisational, communication and negotiation skills.
- Resilient and adaptable.
- Bilingual – English & French

The role
This is an important and exciting post for the organisation and as the Head of Finance, you will be responsible for leading best practice financial reporting and analysis for the charity. The role has two direct reports (as part of a team of five) and involves working across the organisation and with senior leadership and trustees to deliver and communicate first class management information.
This is impactful and broad Head of Finance role, but to give an idea of focus, the core areas of delivery will include:
- Statutory accounts & audit – act as the primary contact for the external auditor, ensure the accounts are consistent with financial standards requirements and delivered on time
- Budgeting, forecasting, monthly reporting and financial analysis - present management accounts and reforecasts to senior leadership, trustees and staff
- Change & improvements – proactively support transformation on CRM systems upgrade, be fully involved in the selection of a new finance system for implementation in 2025

JOB SUMMARY
The Head of Finance will be active in preparing monthly management accounts and commentary for the Senior Management Team.
The Head of Finance will be responsible for the ongoing development of the financial systems, processes and procedures, monthly accounts, cash flow, as well as budgeting and forecasting.
BUDGETING & REPORTING
- Preparation of annual income and expenditure budgets for the Charity, working collaboratively with Heads of Department and members of SMT.
- Review and collate all Head office service costs and professional fees and calculate cross company charging for financial reporting.
- Provision of income and expenditure reports, variance analysis and reconciliation of fundraising activities.
- Prepare monthly management accounts, including balance sheet, metrics, and commentary.
- Provide a quarterly report for submission to the Board of Trustees
- Formulate monthly rolling forecast cashflow for the Charity and Trading Company including phased income budget and planned expenditure.
FINANCIAL SYSTEMS CONTROL
- Ensure the organisation operates robust accounting procedures and systems of internal financial control in line with current good practice and legislation.
- Oversee and facilitate the annual external audit but effective liaison with the auditors and preparation of accounts ready for inspection.
- Regular review of access rights and permissions for accounting, banking & HR software systems
- Ensure the Charity works in accordance with Charity SORP, HMRC, Charity Commission Regulations and other relevant bodies’ recommended code of practice.
- Keep up to date with changes in legislation affecting finance, payroll & HR ensure this information is cascaded down to other members of the Team.
KNOWLEDGE
- ACCA, ACA or CIMA Qualified with significant post qualification experience
- Excellent technical and analysis skills, including advanced Excel modelling and analysis.
- Knowledge of the Charity SORP and Charity Commission requirements and guidance
