Reports to: Executive Director

Direct Reports: 3

Holiday: 25 days annual leave p.a. plus bank holidays

Fine Cell Work (FCW) is looking for an experienced leader, with knowledge of the criminal justice sector,  to join its Senior Management Team. FCW is a dynamic and original charity which transforms prisoners’ lives through training them to do high quality, creative work. We work in 32 prisons training and paying men and women to do skilled craftwork in their cells and on sewing and embroidery machines in workshops. The prisoners’ handmade products are sold to public and to designers, artists and heritage organisations, many of whom commission bespoke pieces. Customer demand for these products continues to grow. Demand from prisons is also on the rise. The hand-stitchers earn a third of proceeds from sales and are encouraged to savefor their families and themselves after release.

In 2017 the charity opened a textiles workshop, the Clothworkers Studio, in London providing employment support to ex-prisoners. This has been very successful with only a 2% reoffending rate (against a national average of 46%) and with 40% of participants going into work (against a national average of 17%). This extension of our work enabled us to grow by a third, increasing sales of prison-made products by 60% over 2016-19 and increasing the number of prisoners worked with by 60%.

Core Job Purpose:

To be responsible for:

  • overseeing the delivery, development and growth of Fine Cell Work (FCW) programmes in prisons nationwide and in the community through the Open the Gates (OTG) post-release programme while supporting the programme delivery team.

  • as part of the Senior Management team (SMT), advising on programme delivery and outcomes, service user involvement and volunteering to inform strategic development and project planning

  • working with the programme delivery team to deliver the OTG programme effectively and compassionately signing off risk management plans and ensuring the delivery and effectiveness of the mentoring programme
  • reviewing and upholding safeguarding, including delivery of safeguarding training, and all policies and procedures for staff, ex-prisoners and all volunteers particularly those supporting OTG and our prison programmes ensuring they are fit for purpose
  • oversight of effective co-ordination, training, communication and support of FCW volunteers across all Fine Cell Work activities
