Based Finsbury Park, London with regular travel
Freedom from Torture is the only organisation in the UK dedicated to providing relief and rehabilitation for survivors of torture. We have a strong human rights ethos and for more than 30 years we have combined our clinical services to torture survivors with a deep commitment to challenging systems that harm them, both in the UK and abroad.
The role of Director of Policy & Advocacy is a vital one. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive, you will lead our work nationally and globally to promote the rights of torture survivors, including in the UK asylum system, and use our formidable clinical evidence of torture practices to strengthen prevention efforts and secure justice and international protection for survivors.
Survivor voices and expertise are at the heart of Freedom from Torture’s influencing work and you will have a special responsibility to champion our world-leading survivor activism approaches to policy-makers and civil society.
You will already have extensive management and leadership experience, including inspiring a team to deliver policy or social change, and a track record of your own in securing policy 'wins' at the national or international levels.
As an expert in the field of human rights relating to torture and/or the rights of refugees, you will have the skills, networks and experience to expand our political influence, build stronger alliances in the human rights, refugee and torture rehabilitation sectors and increase our profile with the British public and with advocacy targets in the UK and at the UN.
You will be an excellent communicator and strong advocate with the confidence to represent Freedom from Torture to high-level advocacy targets, including government ministers and UN bodies, and serve as one of our principal media spokespeople.
You will provide strong leadership for our high-performing Policy & Advocacy Directorate - comprising researchers, asylum and human rights policy experts, domestic and international advocacy specialists, and a survivor activism team - and provide strategic direction to and oversight of our ambitious, long-term influencing programmes rooted in the three pillars of our charitable work: rehabilitation; protection; and accountability.
As part of our Senior Management Team, you will contribute to cross-organisational strategy-setting, operational planning and resource allocation, and support Freedom from Torture's effective governance.
