Job description

You will oversee the day-to-day operational activities of the Liverpool animal rescue centre, empowering others to deliver an excellent standard of service aligned with Freshfields’ vision and values. You will ensure that all relevant procedures are followed by staff and visitors. You will work closely with the Director to implement the Strategic Plan. You will ensure that a high standard of care is provided to the animals, and that the work of the staff reflects positively the ethos of Freshfields Animal Rescue.

Key Activities: Operational Management

  • Line management supervision of designated staff. Provide supervision, set objectives and provide the leadership to ensure that agreed performance targets are achieved.
  • Monitor the performance of those staff for whom you are directly responsible, informally on a daily basis and formally by use of Supervision and Appraisal procedures. You will take action as required to maximise their contribution to the organisation and arrange for targeted training, mentoring and other resources to improve their performance to a high standard, in line with Freshfields’ ethos and expectations
  • Delegate effectively, enabling you to focus on the higher-level tasks required of your role whilst fostering a culture of trust and communication between staff. You will develop an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of your workforce, ensuring each member of the team is happy and confident in their role.
  • Oversee the day-to-day work of staff and volunteers, making the best possible use of financial and human resources.
  • Work closely with the Director to further the aims of the charity, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in animal related projects.
  • Authorise expenditure and purchase orders within designated budget limits.
  • Promote the robust implementation of the Volunteer Development Policy. Ensure that staff are encouraging volunteers to take up opportunities for assigned jobs and for learning and development activities where practicable.
  • Monitor the effective preparation and operation of the Units’ staff rotas within budget, ensuring in liaison with the Director that there is sufficient cover across the centre.
  • Collaborate with colleagues at other Freshfields sites to achieve common goals.

Key Activities: Data Collection and Information Management

  • Co-ordinate effective information sharing between the Units and the Fundraising Team/others, ensuring that the Units gather relevant information on admissions/rehoming statistics and other data as directed.
  • Ensure Deputies are well-informed as to the current issues and priorities across the organisation and are supported to gain a wider perspective and understanding of the organisation’s overall aims.
  • Take responsibility for, facilitate and monitor core data collection within each unit. This will involve statistics relating to animals, adoptions, volunteers, visitors and other issues as needed by the Fundraising Team
  • Work closely with the Fundraising & Communications Team, providing regular updates and news stories as needed, to further the development of Freshfields and to provide accountability to donors and funders
  • Monitor recording of animal data, prioritising use of ASM where practical.
  • Ensure that all rescue and veterinary records are maintained in compliance with Government regulations.
  • Maintain excellent relationships with the public and other agencies, ensuring that constructive, supportive and accessible information is provided.


  • To represent the organisation in publicity and promotional activity across a wide range of media, including social media and press, radio and TV as required.
  • To perform other duties consistent with the requirements of the post, as directed.
