GASP Motor Project

Job Description

CEO of a Surrey-based charity that delivers hands-on courses in basic motor mechanics and practical engineering to young people, many of whom are vulnerable or ‘at risk’. This life-changing Alternative Learning Provision operates from a purpose-built workshop in Albury, outside Guildford, or around the county from our mobile unit. The salary is set at £45675 based on a 35-hour week, with the potential for flexible working for the right candidate. As part of the post holder’s duties it is expected that the role will include attendance at events in which the charity is involved outside normal office hours including evenings and weekends (e.g. motor shows, fundraising events, race days etc)

The role is accountable to a Board of Trustees via the Chair and has a team permanent staff and volunteers reporting to it.

GASP has developed significantly in the last five years increasing program delivery from 70 sessions in 2011/12 to 446 sessions in 2018/19. Income has increased 6 fold in the same period. As an independent charity, we enjoy a very strong reputation with service users and stakeholders for our AQA Unit Awards and their positive impact on young people – helping them to change their behaviours, appreciate the value of teamwork, and to prepare for the world of work. McLaren and ExxonMobil are among the high-profile corporate sponsors who support our work.

Students learn practical skills in a safe and supervised professional environment, with daytime, after school and evening sessions. The GASP core technical syllabus focuses on car mechanics and general maintenance, and on working with small vehicles such as go-karts and quad bikes. Our exciting industry-linked programme, partnering schools with businesses, gives students the opportunity to develop the skills that will help their progression pathway into employment – and get experience of the world of work at first hand.

The Chief Executive is responsible to the Board of Trustees for:

  • the strategic development of GASP and its programmes
  • managing the overall operations of the charity and ensuring the quality of delivery of all programmes 
  • generating the income required (fundraising and sessional fees) to enable the programmes to be delivered
  • developing strategic relationships with partner organisations and stakeholders.

* The acronym GASP stands for Gomshall, Albury, Shere and Peaslake; young people from these villages were the first to benefit when the motor project was established in 2005 as an evening youth group. In 2009 it became a charity and from 2010 started to deliver innovative daytime programmes, moving to a new purpose-built workshop in 2012.
