Job description

Gatwick Detainees Welfare Group seeks a new Trustee Treasurer.

For over 25 years, GDWG has provided practical and emotional support to people detained in two immigration removal centres at Gatwick through the work of volunteer befrienders. We are a small but determined charity, committed to improving life for asylum seekers and migrants. Our staff team of seven people work ethically and we seek to build best possible working practice.

The UK is the only country in western Europe that detains people indefinitely for administrative purposes and at GDWG, we believe that detention is expensive, a waste of human life and we call for an end to indefinite immigration detention for all.

If you believe that indefinite incarceration without judicial oversight should end now, and that people who are detained should have access to justice, please consider joining our team of trustees and volunteers. Our culture is one that prioritises listening and we strive to express hospitality and welcome in all we do.  Our Refugee Tales project takes its inspiration from The Canterbury Tales and features walking and storytelling to call for change.  Our parliamentary work enables individuals who have lived experience of detention to speak to politicians and people of influence and to call for an end to indefinite detention.

We work to create a culture of inclusion and we believe that we learn better together with a diverse team. We welcome the contributions of all in terms of education, culture, ethnicity, race, sex, gender identity and expression, age, languages spoken, colour, religion, sexual orientation and beliefs.

GDWG is overseen by a Board of Trustees who have the ultimate responsibility for the legal and efficient running of the charity for the benefit of people in detention.

The Board meets four times a year with occasional extra meetings.

The Treasurer will be a qualified accountant, ideally but not necessarily with experience at Board level. The role requires a person who can both understand and contribute to the big picture and strategic issues and also manage detail and undertake substantive financial and accounting work. We are looking for someone who is both an excellent team member and an independent thinker.

The main responsibilities are to:

  • Oversee the financial affairs of GDWG and take the lead among trustees on governance and compliance matters
  • Ensure the Charity remains financially viable
  • Ensure GDWG maintains a high standard of financial control and management
  • Prepare and present management accounts and other financial reports
  • Work closely with the Director and other staff, trustees and volunteers to ensure the organisation’s success
  • Make a full contribution to the Charity as a member of the Board of Trustees
  • Support the Charity’s fundraising efforts, particularly with the preparation of project budgets for funding applications

If you would like to work with us, please download the full Role Description and Person Specification for the Treasurer. We offer a thorough induction and support. The post is voluntary but appropriate expenses are available.

The closing date for applications is 25 November 2020.

Interviews will be held on 9 December 2020.
