Our Team Members are involved in every aspect of life on the farm and the farm is firmly embedded in the local community with Team Members providing gardening services to local people as well as volunteering on the Sandon Estate

 We are looking for a Chief Officer who will be responsible for the day to day running of the farm as well as working with the Trustees to take the charity forwards.  The successful candidate will have experience of working with adults with learning disabilities, will have skills in finance, management and IT, and will enjoy working in a busy environment where there are changing demands and priorities throughout the day.

Contract: Permanent, subject to a five-month probationary period
Hours: full-time, 28-35 hours per week. Youth Realities hosts a fortnightly 4-day working week policy.
Location: Hybrid working, with in-person requirements from Youth Realities’ office in Colindale (NW9 5XW) and attending events where required in London.
Salary: £46,800 - this is based on current resource and trustees are open to salary increases as funding becomes available.

Job purpose

This role is pivotal in ensuring the financial sustainability and integrity of LGT, developing resilient foundations for our front-line services, community development, policy and campaigns work to grow in scale and impact.

Working closely with the CEO, Project and Team Leads, you’ll lead all aspects of financial management from budgeting, accounting and compliance, financial management of grants, to reporting to the Finance Committee to support the Board of Trustees and leadership with financial planning and decision making. Finance is the core of the role, however you’ll also use your data management and organisation skills to help us maintain and develop our workflow and data management systems and processes, and oversee other core operational functions delivered by our Business Operations Administrator.

We are a small, collaborative and committed team, with ambitious plans to grow the impact of our work and to diversify and grow our income in the coming years. As a newly created role, sitting within our senior leadership team and reporting to the CEO, there’s huge scope to contribute your experience and ideas to the strategic and operational development of the organisation - and invest in your own professional development too. The Finance Manager is responsible for the day to day operation, management & control of the finance function, including the completion of all finance tasks including financial & management accounting. Reports directly to the Executive Director.

About the post of CEO

You will report directly to the Board of Trustees, ensuring excellent governance of the Charity, regulatory compliance with the Charity Commission and Companies House, and will collaborate with Trustees on designing and executing the 2024-2027 strategy. You will lead and support a team of seven staff, supporting 500+ older and disabled Neighbours annually with a large team of volunteers. You will ensure excellent management of charity’s finances and that adequate funding is in place to maintain all charitable activity, monitoring and evaluation. JOB DESCRIPTION

Strategy and Operations

1. Develop, implement, and lead execution of the charity's annual operational plan and 3-year strategic plan.

2. Identify appropriate level of staffing, volunteering, ensuring that all staff and volunteers are appropriately interviewed, vetted, inducted, trained, developed, and supported to deliver against their objectives.

3. Ensure appropriate upkeep, security, and management of the charity’s premises, including all relevant contracts and payments.

People

5. Line management of seven staff members, and responsibility for staff and team development, cohesion and appraisals.

6. Recruit and support social club facilitators and appropriate consultants to provide additional resource to the charity as required.

7. Lead staff member for safeguarding, liaising directly with Hammersmith and Fulham Adult Social Care.

8. Ensure appropriate mechanisms and safeguards are in place to support up to 100 regular volunteers, and up to 100 additional corporate/student volunteers.

Finance and Fundraising

10. Develop, implement, and lead charity’s financial and fundraising planning and management, ensuring that the charity operates at least at break-even, ideally with a small surplus.

11. Ensure that the charity has a diverse range of income across various streams, inclusive of (but not limited to) public sector, trusts and foundations, corporate income, events, and online giving.

12. Ensure that the charity is receiving value for money with all expenditure, ensuring contract review on a timely basis as appropriate.

13. Ensure appropriate cashflow projections so that expenditure does not exceed income in any one year unless pre-agreed with trustees.

14. Ensure that appropriate financial controls are in place so to protect charity and anyone handling money on behalf of the charity.

17 Organise, attend, record and report at board meetings every two months, inclusive of finance and operations reporting and the regular cycle of governance reviews.

18 Plan, organise and attend AGM and annual strategy session.

19 Ensure appropriate level of risk management and insurance are in place for the charity.

20 Ensure all relevant policies, procedures and financial controls are in place, inclusive of annual review.

Communications and Impact

21. Represent and promote the charity in public, sourcing media opportunities as appropriate so to increase visibility.

22. Represent the charity on appropriate networks and forums so to develop stakeholder relationships and source opportunities for cross-partner collaboration.

23. Ensure positive, fit-for-purpose, internal and external communications, inclusive of monthly newsletters, social media presence and other marketing materials.

24. Ensure appropriate monitoring and evaluation of projects and develop relationships with academic institutions and/or research consultancies where possible so to elicit external perspectives and scrutiny of the charity’s work.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Salary will be c. £54,000 and is set in line with NJC pay scales 2024/25.

An opportunity to lead the smooth running of the day-to-day operational finance function and oversee the financial planning and analysis process of a Trust.

What will you be doing?
As a Financial Controller you will lead and manage the finance team, ensuring high levels of customer service, accuracy, and reliability.  You will lead on recruitment, induction, and appraisal of designated staff, providing effective communication, training, and mentoring to enable staff to carry out duties.

You will also deputise for the CFO as and when required and be responsible for overseeing the financial administration related to purchasing, payments, banking, sales and income processing financial transactions.You will also play a lead role in the year end audit and production of financial statements.

You will be responsible for reviewing and quality assuring the management accounts and budget forecasting function of the Trust, ensuring management accounts and budgets are produced in a reliable, timely and accurate manner as they form the basis of decision making. You will ensure consolidated returns are accurate and completed and submitted timely to external bodies including DfE Returns, TPS audit, VAT and other HMRC returns etc.

What you need to offer:

This is a Financial Controller role so we would expect candidates to possess a recognised CCAB accountancy qualification, but we are open as to whether this would be ACA / CIMA / ACCA or CIPFA and this will run alongside previous experience within a similar role.

In addition, we are looking for someone with experience of leading a team, who has also successfully implemented, reviewed and developed systems and processes that support a finance function.

You will need extensive experience working in financial management,  demonstrable expertise in the completion of financial reports and ability to complete core transactional work alongside strategic level responsibilities.  Most importantly as a Financial Controller you will have experience of consolidating accounts and managing financial risks.

About the role  

Smart Works is volunteer-powered and exists to empower all women who need help getting into work. As such, a fantastic opportunity has arisen for a proactive self-starter with outstanding leadership skills to take on the pivotal role of being the Head of Smart Works Scotland. Reporting to the Chair of the Trustee Board, the role is responsible for developing and delivering our core strategies and for the overall operation of our two centres in Glasgow and Edinburgh. 

In practice, this involves leading a small staff team to thrive in their roles and deliver outstanding results, with direct line management responsibilities for 3 team members out of 8. It also includes representing our charity to a range of stakeholders across the region, contributing to our ambitious client targets and unlocking vital funds to deliver the Three Year Plan. 

A major focus of this role will be to deliver, and support team members to aid delivery, of our annual fundraising target (c. £400k) via, grants and trusts, corporate partnerships, fundraising events, and identifying new income streams. 

The Head of Smart Works Scotland must build strong working relationships with the staff team and Board of Trustees, foster excellent collaborations with a variety of stakeholders and have significant experience across multiple fundraising streams. 

Whilst the successful individual will be supported by the Chair, Board of Trustees and colleagues in other centres, they will be expected to work autonomously and confidently in carrying out their duties. There may be occasional evening and weekend work in order to support fundraising, networking and key events as required. 

The role will be based in our Edinburgh or Glasgow centre, and flexible working options are available.

Duties and responsibilities

• Leading a staff team of 8 across two centres, ensuring all team members are thriving in their roles and continuing to develop their skills.
• Supporting each direct report with project deliverables and identifying continuous improvement opportunities in our ways of working. 
• Oversee the smooth running of both centres, ensuring all client and service delivery targets are on track and all protocols such as safeguarding and governance are adhered to.
• Setting and delivering our core strategies, across all functional areas. 
• Working with various staff members on targeted campaigns and corporate partnerships, providing guidance and support on the annual fundraising target c. £400k via our three revenue streams - Corporate, Community and Events, Grants and Trusts. 
• Manage the day-to-day costs of the budget, contributing to timely process reconciliation with the Board Treasurer and Group Finance Team.
• Delivering financial activities to target, maintaining an up to date database with relevant income tracking and pipeline information to facilitate regular financial reporting to the Board of Trustees and timely process reconciliation with the Board Treasurer and Group Finance team.
• Supporting the team to raise awareness of our charity and increase our supporter community through social media campaigns and in-person events throughout the year. 

Personal Specification 

Essential Criteria

• Outstanding interpersonal and team management / leadership skills.
• Significant experience of generating income from a variety of sources, including Events, Trusts, Foundations, Community and Corporate sponsorship.
• Demonstrable experience of securing new business and onboarding new partnerships. 
• Experience of managing four figure+ partnerships across the following activities: employee fundraising, sponsorship, commercial or grants.
• A strong networker, with relationship management experience across seniority levels and sectors. 
• Strong presentation skills, with prior experience delivering engaging sessions to large audiences. 
• Experience of balancing changing priorities and responding to delivery needs.
• Proactive approach to problem solving, with an entrepreneurial attitude towards fundraising strategy.
• Ability to work autonomously and also have a strong team focus and ethic.
• Good working knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, CRM systems.
• Target driven, with excellent organisation and time management skills to meet deadlines and monthly / quarterly KPIs. 

Desirable Criteria

• An understanding of the employment and skills landscape in Scotland.
• Experience of working collaboratively with volunteer teams and / or in the not for profit sector.
• Financially aware, able to interpret basic financial accounts for reporting purposes.
