Job description

Senior Research and Evaluation Officer

Salary: £34,000 – £39,000 per annum depending on experience

Contract type: full time, permanent

Location: London

Background and context

BookTrust is the UK's largest children's reading charity. We know that children who read are happier, healthier, more empathetic and more creative. They also do better at school.

Working with every local authority and across every region in England, Northern Ireland and Wales, and supported by Arts Council funding we reach over 3 million families a year through partners in schools, children's centres, health visitors and libraries. This incredible network helps us to get children excited about reading from an early age.
This is a brilliant time to join BookTrust.  We are developing a new strategy and a new approach to engaging with and understanding our beneficiaries.  We are ambitious about developing our programmes to reach more children, particularly those who are disadvantaged, and we want to understand the difference our work is making so we can learn and develop what we do.

Our research team is growing. We are looking for a skilled, curious and experienced senior research and evaluation officer. The successful candidate will work in our team of four to shape and deliver a varied research and evaluation programme.  They will work collaboratively with partners from across the organisation to help put research at the heart of BookTrust’s work; ensuring that we evaluate, learn and reassess our approach to make the greatest impact we can.

About you

You will be a strong researcher who has excellent qualitative, quantitative and communication skills. You will be committed to and excited by the potential for research and insight to inform decision making within BookTrust, ultimately to strengthen our work with children and families.  You will be thorough in your approach to delivering research on important social issues, curious by nature and an effective problem solver.

You will have gained some experience in a paid research position, ideally with at least 2 years in a setting outside academia. You may have worked in a research role in another charity, in a consultancy, government or public body.
You will have experience and skills in qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

To find out more about who we are, including a job description and details of how to apply, please visit our website.

Please send a copy of your CV along with a covering letter showing how you meet the person specification and your motivations for applying for this role. Please also answer these questions in your cover letter:

BookTrust engages with its beneficiaries (children and families) through evaluation and research activities to inform its future work. Why is it important for a charity like BookTrust to engage with beneficiaries? What challenges might BookTrust encounter in engaging with beneficiaries and how would you address some of these?
Your covering letter should not be longer than two sides including your response to these questions.

The closing date for this role is Friday, 7th February 2020, 5 pm.

There will be two round of interviews, the first round of telephone interviews will take place on the 13th and 14th of February. Face to face interview dates are still to be confirmed.
