Job description

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Communications Lead to manage the communications for the charity including overseeing the strategic delivery on all communications for our programmes, services, campaigns and fundraising.

 

  • Salary: £26,000 to £29,000, depending on experience (pro rata)
  • Hours: 28 per week (0.8 FTE), with flexible working hours offered
  • Location: GMYN offices in central Manchester, with flexible homeworking arrangements
  • Reporting to: Head of Development
  • Direct Reports: No staff management; occasional volunteer supervision

 

Who are GMYN?

For many young people, the transition to adulthood isn’t easy. In the UK, one third of young people are lonely, half feel unready for work and half feel like they don’t belong to their community.

Our vision is #YoungPeopleCan and we help young people in Greater Manchester overcome this. We deliver a range of development programmes and drop-in activities to help young people aged 13-25 transition to adulthood feeling skilled, supported and positive.

Communications at GMYN:

Communications spans across the whole of GMYN, from supporting delivery staff to best promote their programmes, through crafting messaging to generate income, to providing advice and guidance on social media and personal branding to the Senior Management Team. With support from our part time Communications Assistant, the Communications Lead plays a strategic role in designing and implementing communications functions across the charity.

In April 2021, we launched our new three-year strategic plan, which lays out ambitious goals. Our key communications priorities centre around inclusion and youth voice: developing our communications and practices to become evermore accessible to all, and to support young people in Greater Manchester to have their say on the issues that matter to them.

Essential Criteria:

  • Demonstrable experience of working in a communications role or a role with similar transferable skills that has achieved results for the organisation.
     
  • Experience of developing and implementing communication strategies or project plans.
     
  • Strong ability to tailor messaging to different stakeholders including staff team, young people and decision-makers.
     
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present confidently and provide support and feedback to team members.
     
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to proof read and quality check written documents.
     
  • Ability to self-manage, work independently to targets but also join up your work with the rest of the Fundraising & Development Team.
     
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and workstreams with a “can do” attitude in order to produce positive results.
     
  • Experience of researching and using data/statistics to demonstrate and communicate impact.
     
  • Ability to produce compelling comms messages and campaigns to promote the work and impact of GMYN in order to generate support.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Skills and knowledge of using relevant software: Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Photoshop); Microsoft Office (Publisher, Word, PowerPoint).
     
  • Experience of creating and adapting content for print and digital (flyers, e- flyers, social media assets, campaign media, copy and press releases etc).
     
  • Experience of using video/audio communication tools including production and editing.
     
  • Understanding of the issues affecting vulnerable young people and a strong commitment to GMYN’s vision, mission and values.
