Formed in 1963, Hansel have been caring for and supporting adults with learning difficulties for almost 60 years. Their practices and methods have progressed over this time, but their core beliefs have never changed: Enabling and empowering people to lead the life they choose, ensuring they are recognised as equal citizens and participate fully in their community.
Established as Hansel Village by Isobel and Tom Murdoch, inspired by their daughter, Lindy, who had Down’s Syndrome, through the hard work of the Murdoch’s, alongside other supporters, the charity was able to grow and develop into a fully integrated community providing residential care, education, sheltered employment and leisure opportunities.
Over the years hansel has continually evolved, reflecting society as a whole. This was evident in 1998 when Hansel Village grew into the Hansel Village of charities. This allowed for the group to grow into a major Scottish charity, recognised as a leader in learning disability service provision. Change and progression is still crucial to Hansel today, but the intrinsic values have never deviated, and Isobel and Tom Murdoch’s vision continues to live on: supporting people to make the most of life.
