Job description

The Aplastic Anaemia Trust (AAT) is the only charity in the UK which is focused on providing everyone affected by aplastic anaemia (AA), a rare illness of the immune system, with information, patient and family-focused emotional and practical support. It is committed to research, so that treatments and care are improved, and a cure can be found.

We have productive working partnerships with major research centres of excellence, raise much needed funds for research, and engage with the expert community in the UK and internationally. Building and maintaining important relationships is crucial to raising and maintaining our profile. We continue to recognise the importance of our focus on supporting patients and families to help them cope with and manage AA and improve their quality of life.  In the last two years we have seen a significant growth in the numbers of people contacting us.

As we receive no government funding, all that we achieve is made possible through the generosity of our supporters and donors.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Our current CEO, having successfully delivered a modernisation programme, is leaving the AAT for pastures new.  We now have a solid foundation for the future of the AAT and its continued growth. We seek to appoint another highly successful, committed and inspiring leader.

Our new CEO will work with our Board and key stakeholders to build and develop our reputation as the leading organisation in its field, providing every patient and their family with the information and support that they need. They will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive patient advocacy programme, champion patients’ rights for and access to excellent quality care and treatment nationally, irrespective of where they live, raising the profile of the disease and the work of the AAT, and through collaborative working, act as an enabler of transformative research, focusing on improving patients’ quality of life and finding a cure.

They will also work to address a range of other challenges and opportunities such as overcoming the impact of Coronavirus on the AAT, our continuing investment in and development of our digital infrastructure and our commitment to improve our representation in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

They will bring to the role a successful and positive track record of charitable leadership of a similarly scaled charity or from within a larger organisation. They will present as a driven self-starter, with the ability to get things done and, given the relative size of the organisation, have the ability to quickly switch between the strategic and the operational.

They will be expected to be ambitious, entrepreneurial and empathetic, bring energy and a vision, and they will have the ability to communicate the work, success and ambition of the AAT and be able to lead, engage and inspire trustees, clinicians, patients and their families, major donors, and our staff and  volunteers.
