Job description

Head of Philanthropy: Role Purpose 

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing fundraising team and help build Hatch’s Trust and Foundation and major donor portfolio. You will be joining at a crucial time in the development of our ambitious five-year strategy to diversify and grow our income and impact. We plan to do this through developing high value, strategic and long term partnerships with like minded philanthropic partners. 

While initially focussed on Trusts and Foundations, longer term, you will be devising strategies and delivering a sustainable and scalable Philanthropic fundraising campaign, including engagement with high net worth individuals.  Your excellent fundraising and relationship building skills will enable you to secure five, six and seven figure gifts as well as deliver outstanding stewardship to funders, supporters and partners, demonstrating the impact Hatch is achieving in a variety of contexts. 


Strategic and operational planning and research:

  • Conducting research to inform the strategic and operational plans for fundraising from trusts, foundations and high net worth individuals.

  • Collaborating with the Director of Fundraising and Partnerships, CEO and Board to explore further opportunities to extend contacts, networks, and relationships.

  • Planning and prioritising fundraising activity to ensure maximum return on investment.

Partnership working and development activities: 

  • Cultivating and securing funding from Trusts and Foundations and high net worth Individuals through diligent planning, excellent relationship building and crafting compelling cases for support and applications for funding. 

  • Working with the Director of Fundraising to develop organisational processes and ways of working to ensure successful cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. 

  • Designing and implementing a programme of relationship development/stewardship and cultivation events and creating other opportunities (i.e. attend events) to develop donor relations with Hatch Enterprise.

  • Working with the Director of Fundraising, CEO, Board  and staff to develop an extended network and pipeline of prospects/relationships, enabling their fundraising roles through briefings, propositions and resources, reports, and connections.

  • Pre-positioning Hatch with grant-making trust/foundation representatives, and collaborating with the programmes team to design propositions and bids for funding.

Donor Stewardship

  • Building, managing and maintaining a full and consistent pipeline of prospects and ensuring timely progression through each stage from identification to stewardship. 

  • Ensuring personalised donor journeys, engagement and funding opportunities are delivered that excite funders and deepen their relationship with Hatch and out founders. 

  • Arranging visits and other creative opportunities for prospects and donors to experience first-hand, learn more and become excited about Hatch’s priorities. 

  • Working with relevant colleagues and stakeholders to ensure seamless coordination, planning, engagement and cultivation of potential and current supporters. 

  • Devising and delivering appropriate and seamless stewardship activity and overseeing a calendar of cultivation and stewardship events.  


  • Maintaining  strong knowledge of relevant legislation and good practice. 

  • Developing and maintaining specialist knowledge of trends and developments in the sector, through completing relevant training, reviewing relevant press and publications and keeping up to date with industry news. 

  • Maintaining and enhancing personal knowledge, skills and networks by keeping abreast of and being responsive to sector news and developments. 

  • Gaining and maintaining in-depth knowledge and understanding of Hatch’s work, priorities and future plans and acting as a spokesperson for the Charity when required, including representing at external events as appropriate. 

  • Be an outstanding advocate for Hatch in line with the core values of the organisation. 

  • Other duties that may be required from time to time as part of a small, dynamic team

Person Specification 


  • Demonstrable fundraising management knowledge and experience in delivering income at scale from high net worth individuals and trusts. 

  • Knowledge of tax effective giving and gift aid requirements. 

  • Knowledge of fundraising best practice and legislation, including data protection.

  • Knowledge of how to use CRM systems to manage donor pipelines and reporting.

  • Problem-solving ability, including metrics-driven thinking


  • Highly skilled at developing and delivering strategic and operational fundraising plans.

  • Skilled at budget management and ability to work to financial targets and managing expenditure budgets or cash flow forecasts. 

  • Able to efficiently manage and deliver a demanding and varied workload, including balancing strategic and operational priorities. 

  • Skilled at delivering successful Major Donor events and engagement opportunities.

  • Proven track record of preparing, writing and presenting funding proposals that lead to five, six and seven figure donations.

  • An all rounder, able to develop a big picture strategy and deliver on the details

  • A proven ability to build, develop and grow key stakeholder and donor relationships

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate and influence at senior levels, internally and externally. 

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills 

  • Excellent  line management skills and track record of empowering, motivating and supporting colleague’s development And/Or managing external stakeholders, such as freelancers or agencies
