Holocaust Memorial Day Trust
City of London, London
£30911 per annum
Permanent, Full-time
Job description
Senior Communications Officer
Vauxhall, Central London (currently home based due to COVID-19)

About Us

Established by the UK Government, Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) is a charity that promotes and supports Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) in the UK.

Holocaust Memorial Day (27 January) is the day for everyone to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. It is a time when we seek to learn the lessons of the past and recognise that genocide does not just take place on its own - it’s a steady process which can begin if discrimination, racism and hatred are not checked and prevented.

HMD is for everyone. Each year across the UK, thousands of people come together to learn more about the past and take action to create a safer future. We know they learn more, empathise more and do more.

Together we bear witness for those who endured genocide and honour the survivors and all those whose lives were changed beyond recognition.

We are currently looking for a Senior Communications Officer to join us and support our communications activities.

The Benefits

- Salary of £30,911 per annum
- 25 days’ holiday (increasing with service to 30 days)
- Help a national charity continue important work

If you are a communications professional with experience of handling complex and sensitive issues, this is an excellent opportunity to take on a challenging, yet highly rewarding role supporting HMDT’s work.

You will have the chance to increase awareness of HMD and amplify the voices of those affected by the Holocaust, which will encourage people to learn from the past and inspire them to challenge prejudice in today’s world.

The Holocaust threatened the fabric of civilisation and genocide must still be resisted every day. If you would like to support our mission and help shape our voice of unity, equality and inclusion, we would love to hear from you.

The Role

As the Senior Communications Officer, you’ll strengthen our media presence, lead our strategic engagement with survivors of the Holocaust and recent genocides and co-ordinate responses to complex and sensitive issues.

In this important role, you’ll oversee media engagement for HMD, working with our Head of Communications and a media support agency to ensure that we reach a wide audience across print, online and broadcast media channels.

Additionally, you will:

- Manage profile-raising events to increase awareness of HMD and HMDT with a range of influencers
- Develop our survivor engagement strategy, ensuring that the experiences of those affected by the Holocaust and genocide are included in resources, online content and at events
- Regularly research, review and develop organisational positions on a range of complex issues
- Review content and ensure that it is accessible, informative and meets our style guidelines

About You

To join us as a Senior Communications Officer, you will need:

- Experience in a communications role, which included delivering media engagement in a busy communications environment
- To be a strong writer who can develop clear messages for different audiences which strengthen the organisational position
- A track record of initiating and building relationships with journalists
- Experience of researching and responding to complex and sensitive issues
- Previous experience of working sensitively with vulnerable or elderly people
- A collaborative approach
