Job description

We are a social mobility movement committed to ensuring that every young person experiences educational equity. After a resourceful leader who wants to drive the finance function of our work forward.

As an award-winning, fast-growing social enterprise our mission is to support young people from disadvantaged communities to identify and fulfil their potential. Working in partnership with schools, we deliver academic tutoring programmes that improve a pupil’s grades, confidence and independence so they can win places at top universities and on high level apprenticeships.

Having turned six years old in February 2020, we’re at an exciting stage of growth and have ambitious plans to scale our impact and reach. This coming academic year, we are supporting over 1500 pupils. Currently working across London, the West Midlands and the South West, we are looking to thoughtfully scale our aca- demic programmes into hard-to-reach deprivation areas; develop a primary strand to our work; and increase the impact of our programmes.

This is an exciting and critical point in the organisation and we are looking for our first ever Finance Manager. You will join the senior leadership team and report directly to the CEO. You will have day-to-day responsibility for the organisation’s finances, working with colleagues to set and manage budgets, maintain accurate financial records and ensure all financial and compliance requirements are met.

As we transition to becoming a charity, we are looking for an individual who is passionate about making education fairer and wants to grow with the organisation. We need an outgoing, self-motivated person to enhance our internal financial capacity and, alongside the CEO, determine long term financial goals and strategies to meet our mission. The individual will manage the organisation’s financial operations and flourish in a small dynamic team.

FINANCE MANAGER ROLE DESCRIPTION

Key Areas of Responsibility

Financial management of the organisation:

  • Create and deliver financial policies to ensure the organisation meets its objectives financially

  • Ensure the organisation is operating with a sustainable financial model in the short and long term

Key point of contact internally and externally regarding accountancy and financial matters. This will include:

  • Organising payroll and pensions

  • Liaising with our accountant to ensure the timely payment of salaries, tax and pension contributions, VAT and corporation tax.

  • Communicating with new and existing team members regarding processes required for finance

  • Supporting staff to meet their project budgets

  • Invoicing of schools, academy trusts and partner organisations

Monitoring income and expenditure reporting to ensure sustainability. This will include:

  • Producing monthly management accounts and other reports as required

  • Reconciling transactions and ledgers to ensure financial control

  • Cash flow reporting and forecasting

  • Work with the CEO to create and maintain KPI reports

Creating medium to long term financial projections to analyse and problem solve any challenges related to the financial health of the organisation:

  • Prepare and develop budgets and forecasts in collaboration with the CEO

  • Make accurate projections to drive and shape the future success of the organisation

Develop financial reports to present back to key stakeholders in the organisation including our Board, funders and school.

Essential characteristics and experience

  • Passion for social mobility: we have big aims and are looking for those who share our desire to make education fairer in the UK so a person’s background does not determine their future.

  • Financial Experience: track record of overseeing finance and managing budgets for at least 2 years professionally

  • Organisation: working in a fast-paced young organisation, you’ll be able to work between different workstreams.

  • Independence: this role requires you to work independently/alone from time to time in the office and/or from home

  • Resourcefulness: we’re a small, dedicated team - you must be a self-starter prepared for practical roles with lots of responsibility. A willingness to stay solution-focused with last minute challenges is a must!

  • Integrity: values driven and an ability to act confidentially.

Desirable knowledge/experience:

  • Formal Qualification: appropriate accounting qualification (CIMA/ACA/ACCA).

  • Experience working with Quickbooks or other similar software.

  • Experience of the charity and social sector, particularly around governance and accounting.

Benefits:

  • An opportunity to contribute to a young, exciting social enterprise with scope to input widely and take on new roles.

  • Annual Leave: 28 days pro rata

  • Office space: initially working from home. Longer term flexible working can be arranged to work from home or be based in our London office (Camden), Birmingham Office (Birmingham City University) or Exeter Office (University of Exeter).

  • Training: we are a reflective organisation and keen to support your professional development. Opportunities include:

    • Being matched with a mentor in the social sector

    • Becoming an accredited Executive Coach

Key Information:

  • Length: 9 month contract to end of August (extension to permanent likely dependent on performance and funding).

  • Hours: Part time, 3 days per week

  • Reporting to: CEO

  • Responsible for: Finance Function of the organisation

  • Start Date: end of November.

  • Interviews will take place online (over Zoom) the week beginning 16th November.
