Hospice Lottery Partnership is a not-for-profit social enterprise company owned by 5 hospices. We raise essential funds to help provide exceptional care to patients and their families at the end of life.
The past year has been an extremely challenging time for income generation. The hospice movement provides an invaluable service to local communities that touches everyone in some way. During the pandemic they have continued to offer exceptional empathetic care for patients and their families, keeping people out of hospital and so supporting the NHS. Although some funding has been forthcoming from government, with the closure of charity shops and the curtailing of mass fundraising events, this has not been enough to close the gap.
The HLP supports this essential service and has an ambition to find new beneficiary partners and so increase income in the medium term. This will help to keep the hospices and hospitals that we support sustainable.
An inspirational Chair with a strategic vision and a tenacious attitude to furthering the goals of the HLP will enable the company to develop and grow, and continue to provide much needed funds to support everyone who needs it at the end of their lives.
This is an exciting time to become Chair because of plans to further increase the number of beneficiary partners in order to grow income and ultimately support more patients and their families.
The Chair will provide leadership and direction to the Board to develop clear strategic plans and operate within good governance. You will establish a strong, supportive relationship with the experienced Chief Executive and lead the directors and management team to develop strategic plans for the company, that will in turn lead to sustainable growth in unrestricted income for the charity partners.
You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the company's Articles and the legal requirements of the Gambling Commission and other regulatory authorities. This will involve strong leadership to ensure that the Board of Directors fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the company, and in particular supporting the independent Directors.
The Chair will constructively appraise management reports, financial information and risks and ensure that Board decisions are acted upon in a timely manner. In addition to chairing the full Board, you will also be fully involved with the Finance & General Purposes Committee.
The relationship with the Chief Executive is key, and you will be responsible for carrying out their annual appraisal and supporting and appraising their work on a continuing basis. You will also lead on appointment and disciplinary processes as required.
An important part of the role is to represent HLP at appropriate functions, meetings and in the media and to act as an ambassador for the company and its partners. Liaison with the Board of Trustees of our partners is also key to ensure that they have a clear understanding of HLP's vision and objectives, and can fully support the work that we do.
