An exciting opportunity has arisen in the London communications team, leading a team of three Officers, based at Veolia’s flagship recycling facility in Southwark, a significant site for media opportunities and corporate clients. This is an excellent first-line manager opportunity for someone who can demonstrate great project-based people and budget management skills, alongside a passion for the environment and sustainability, and a real desire to improve recycling in the borough.


What you’ll do    

The Communications and Outreach Manager for Southwark will manage and develop the Education, Communication and Outreach (ECO) function for the contract and ensure strategic project plans are delivered to meet objectives. You will work closely with the Area ECO Manager and the Officers to develop community engagement projects to change resident behaviours and improve recycling rates, and will be responsible for the budget, timeline and quality of their delivery. You will also be the day to day point of contact for the client and contract manager and have responsibility for the business as usual outputs of the team.

The Communications and Outreach Manager will identify good news stories and feed them to the regional digital and PR team, as well as working closely with this team to achieve regional and contract objectives. You will keep abreast of industry developments and build strong relationships with your client and colleagues at all levels across the contract. 

You will drive the performance of the ECO officers, coaching and mentoring them to improve their project planning, community engagement approach, and support them in achieving their personal goals. If you love working with the community and leading on projects, this is the role for you.


The experience you will need


  • Project development and management - contributing to and executing ECO strategies and plan 

  • Experience delivering behaviour change and/or community engagement techniques and analysing results

  • Superb written and verbal communication skills including presentation skills

  • Experience of building strong stakeholder relationships


  • Industry knowledge

  • Understanding or experience of working with local authorities

  • People and budget management - can be project-based rather than as a direct line manager

  • Experience of content production across multiple formats

  • Advanced understanding of data management and analysis 

  • Understanding of PR, social media, social advertising and digital communications

Where you’ll work 

You will be based in our flagship Integrated Waste Management Facility in Southwark, an innovative site which treats over 200,000 tonnes of recycling and waste every year, providing green products and energy, and saving precious natural resources. The site supports one of our key local authority recycling and waste contracts in South London and due to its location is a significant site for corporate clients and publicity opportunities.
