You’d consider yourself a specialist with using monitoring, evaluation, research, and learning technology like KoBoToolbox and Power BI. You love supporting others as they learn data and tech skills. And you love building collaborative community.

Role:

  • HDS is looking for a Social Impact Data Specialist & Online Community Manager as part of a tiny start-up team. Which means a varied role, with lots of scope for creativity. The role will include coordination of an online membership community to provide ongoing coaching and collaboration to global M&E/MEAL/MERL/IM specialists, creation of video-based community content, and providing consulting services to external social-impact and humanitarian organisations.

Who is HDS?

  • HDS (Humanitarian Data Solutions) coaches and trains members of social-change organisations on how to digitally collect and visualize programme data. We also provide consultancy services in MERL, data collection (primarily using KoBoToolbox) and data visualisation and reporting (primarily using Power BI).

Your Areas of Expertise/Strong Interest/Passion (These are nice-to-haves – if you have a similar profile, don’t worry if you can’t tick every single box):

Humanity:

  • While you might be passionate about tech and data, your real and true interest lies in loving people. You approach tech/data with a people-first lens, and design tools around usability and sustainable behaviour change that prioritises humanity over technology.

Technical:

  • Strong knowledge and experience in NGO/Humanitarian Information Management
  • Particular expertise using and managing KoBoToolbox and Power BI
  • Good knowledge of data storage solutions (e.g., database, data warehouse, data storage and accessibility)
  • Awareness of automation/integration of different tools (e.g., API, REST, use of ODK Briefcase, Flow, scripts to automate/trigger data refreshing)
  • Strong understanding of data visualisation of XLSForm-based data (e.g., Power BI, QLIK, Tableau, or other)
  • Strong experience in applying Data Protection and data protection principles

Educating/Coaching:

  • Simplifying concepts, coaching, educating
  • Creating tutorial and training content (not camera-shy)
  • Online group coaching and facilitation through both text-based support, imagery, and video

Communications & Networking:

  • You network and collaborate with others in the MERL sector who recognize your skill
  • You are comfortable sharing your expertise publicly and drawing out/encouraging others in their expertise/skill

Programmes/Operations:

  • You have experience working internationally in social-impact or humanitarian operational settings

Familiarity With:

Context:

  • Have a good understanding of humanitarian and social development programming data (e.g., Livelihoods data, Needs Assessment data, impact data, Monitoring and Evaluation Frameworks)
  • Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, Research and Learning Frameworks – an understanding of typical data managed by humanitarian and social-change organisations for MERL/M&E purposes
  • Impact investing – understanding how programmes, data, and funding are intrinsically linked

Key Tasks/Skill Areas:

Consulting 50%

  • Understanding Client Data Requirements to support business/organization objectives
  • Develop “Data Flow” and “Information Management System Diagrams” to help effectively communicate and clarify business-use cases
  • Key Software: KoBoToolbox & Power BI
  • Work with data-collectors to understand key data inputs
  • Develop data storage strategy (e.g. database) for client that is systemized and replicable
  • Develop automation-enabled data organization and reporting/visualization solutions to support key audiences for client
  • Maintain client systems on monthly basis (e.g., support/maintenance)
  • Attend client meetings

Training and Membership Administration 50%

  • Support Student Community in the online training courses “Mastering Form Design in KoBoToolbox”, “Getting Started in KoBoToolbox”, and “Getting Started in Power BI”
  • Weekly group coaching sessions
  • Review assignments and give individualized support
  • Provide personalized feedback and support to students through email and forum discussions
  • Create, coordinate and coach members and students in a Community of Practice Network
  • Facilitate online engagement
  • Text, photo, and video support
  • Help members move through the ‘success path’
  • Moderate discussions
  • Organise and hold masterclasses and group coaching
  • Engage in public forums (KoBoToolbox, ODK, Social Media) to help solve problems, build brand recognition, and build your own skills
  • Organise webinars/masterclasses with experts in the sector.

Environment:

  • Primarily work-from-home
  • Oxfordshire-based company, but because of the remote nature, you don't need to be in Oxfordshire
  • Small team, start-up feel, creativity valued
  • Regular and adhoc team days in-person in Oxfordshire
