Job Description

The Evidence and Knowledge for Development (K4D) programme is an exciting and unusual programme at IDS that provides a bridge between academic experts and people working in donor agencies and government policy and research departments. K4D Research Officers combine thorough subject knowledge, deep understanding of development policy processes, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly and concisely. The role offers experience in and exposure to development policy and research at the highest level, and may be of particular interest to those considering a career in policy-based research, development agencies, non-governmental organisations, or consultancy.

We are seeking to recruit a highly-motivated Research Officer to help us inform and influence international development policy on economic growth in low-and middle-income countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The ideal candidate would have good knowledge of fields such as private sector development, international trade, labour markets, development finance, and inclusive economic growth; experience working in or carrying out research in low- or middle-income countries; and extensive practical experience communicating research to policy-makers and practitioners.

Candidates should have a postgraduate degree in development economics or business is essential for the role, and areas of specialism such as private sector development, labour markets, human capital, international trade, political economy analysis, development finance, economic growth, governance, statistics and econometrics would be desirable. The post requires strong analytical and writing skills, as well as strong coordination, prioritisation, project management and communication skills. It also involves liaising with DFID advisers and other senior development agency staff so an assertive and diplomatic approach to relationship management is required.
