The International Institute of Rural Reconstruction [IIRR] is one of the world’s leading rural development NGOs. It maintains a staff of 200+ in 9 countries across Africa, Asia, and North America. The organization’s programs build economic opportunities for rural people by improving their health, education, environment, and food systems.  Though IIRR has delivered over 60 years of impact that has improved millions of lives, it remains agile and committed to testing, prototyping (and even failing) in order to continually learn how best to deliver the most cost-effective impact to the rural communities who need it most. Like so many organizations around the world, we are working hard to ensure that rural communities are spared the heavy burden of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are seeking a well experienced Communications Manager to join our team.

The Role

  • The Communications Manager will conceptualize, plan and implement the organization’s internal and external communications.
  • The Communications Manager should have a solid grasp of IIRR’s legacy on rural development across Asia and around the world.
  • The Communications Manager role is an ideal position for a creative media-relations expert who inspires collaboration, thinks like an organizer, improves tactics based on results, and is skillful at narrative strategy and storytelling from a relational approach.
  • The ideal candidate has experience working with value-driven organizations, and a passion for environmental and other social issues.
  • Directly manages and mentors teams, and provides overall strategic direction and feedback for their development.
  • Collaborates closely with the Global Management Team in order to develop innovative public engagement activities needed to amplify our work.
  • The Communications Manager will report directly to the Operations Manager.

Job Activities

  • Manage the day-to-day internal and external communications activities of IIRR.
  • Maintain a strong brand for the organization, including impactful and fit-for-purpose publications, website, social media and merchandise.
  • Develop an annual communications plan (to include an integrated marketing strategy and a media relations component) for the organization.
  • Performs research and analysis using a variety of resources to craft appropriate media messages and materials, including writing news releases, statements, letters to the editor, op-eds and other materials as required.
  • Identifies media opportunities and implements communications in print, broadcast, and digital, with an emphasis on non-traditional media.
  • Establish partnerships with micro-influencers to support geographic and thematic areas of work.
  • Work closely with the directors and provide strategic guidance to reaching and engaging key audiences.
  • Collaborates with the US Office, Country Directors, and other relevant colleagues on carrying out timely and coordinated responses in breaking rurally relevant news events.
  • Undertakes the following supervisory responsibilities: assigns work and establishes standards and work priorities; ensures staff training and the development of employee skills; provides ongoing performance feedback; prepares, and conducts formal performance planning and evaluation; recommends hiring; oversees a marketing budget.
  • Supervises, directs, develops, and provides general, strategic and technical communication guidance to staff.
  • Manage and monitor the dissemination of media releases, articles, editorials, and other communications materials.
  • Manage and oversee the development and maintenance of content on the IIRR website and its social media channels.
  • Oversee implementation of other digital marketing strategies (e-newsletter, blogs, Google Ads, etc) including the ongoing monitoring of analytics to inform decisions.
  • Manage the development and/or update of printed or digital materials, such as brochures and fact sheets.
  • Provide communications support to selected events.
  • Undertake other duties as may be reasonably required from time to time, including representational activities for IIRR.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrated understanding of global economic and social disparities. Experience working on rural development issues is preferable (but not required).
  • Experienced manager who can skillfully delegate and provide meaningful feedback, holding teams accountable and providing support for professional growth.
  • Creativity and impeccable writing skills.
  • 10+ years of experience in communications or marketing; preferably working with environmental and/or other international development issues.
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, or related field.
  • Master’s Degree preferred (but not required).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge and experience working in the rapidly changing world of media, including new media platforms and technologies, with focus on user generated content and how to get stories placed.
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a complex organization, juggle competing demands and maintain good working relations with direct reports, colleagues and media. 
  • Able to work effectively as a team player.
