Job description

Our purpose is to make a positive impact on the experiences and outcomes of all Imperial College students from all backgrounds and we are one of the oldest students’ unions in the UK.  We’re a registered charity with income of c.£11m and a staff team of c.250.  We are a separate legal entity, and are independent, from Imperial College. However, we work together in close partnership and we receive annual funding from the College through our block grant.

There is so much that makes Imperial College Union special. We’re based in an historic campus environment in South Kensington – a short distance from the Natural History Museum and Hyde Park.  The Union building itself is next door to the Royal Albert Hall.

Imperial students are some of the highest performing and most dedicated students in the world, meaning they are incredibly engaged and keen to participate in the opportunities and activities on offer – including our amazing range of over 380 clubs, societies and projects.  We have a strong relationship with the College and have been on an exciting and positive journey of change and improvement, delivering our ‘back to basics’ strategy over the last 3-years.

We’re looking for a new Managing Director that will build on our strong foundations and help us continue our journey to become an outstanding students’ union; someone that will help us be the kind of students’ union that our members need and deserve.

The role requires a leader that can mentor and co-create solutions with student leaders and that is passionate about developing and empowering students.

The successful candidate will bring experience in leading the development and delivery of long-term strategic plans and a clear understanding of good practice in the Higher Education, Voluntary and/or Students’ Union sectors.

You will need to demonstrate the ability to build effective partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders, further building the growing reputation of the Union as a force for change and positive impact.  You’ll also need to be able to motivate and inspire the team you work with day in, day out – to further establish a high-performing, inclusive culture.

We offer sector-leading benefits for the role including a generous 21.6% employer contribution pension scheme, 39-40 days holiday and a strong commitment to flexible working.  As the role is on an Imperial College employment contract, you would also have access to an extensive range of professional development opportunities and peer support from within the College.

We think this is an amazing opportunity and hope you do as well.

We are committed to equality of opportunity, to eliminating discrimination and to creating an inclusive working environment for all. We therefore encourage candidates to apply irrespective of age, disability, marriage or civil partnership status, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion and belief, gender identity, sex, or sexual orientation. We are an Athena SWAN Silver Award winner, a Disability Confident Leader and a Stonewall Diversity Champion.
