Job description

This is a pivotal time for data protection and privacy and the ICO’s work as the UK’s information rights regulator has never been more relevant.

Almost everything we do creates a digital data trail - shopping online, posting on social media, banking on the go or scanning a travel card. Our personal data has never been more valuable and we should be able to trust that organisations will treat it fairly and look after it securely.

Whether we’re investigating a cyber-attack on a multi-national company or the loss of patient data from a local hospital, the ICO will take action on behalf of the UK public.

The data protection laws we regulate have undergone recent reform, our battle to stop the scourge of nuisance calls is gathering momentum and our role in upholding the Freedom of Information Act is vital in ensuring the public’s right to know.

The communications team at the ICO plays a central role in achieving our aim to increase the public’s trust and confidence in how their personal data is used and to improve the standards of information rights practices in organisations.

The role

We are looking for an experienced and effective communications professional to join our expanding team.

The ICO has a national and international profile. You’ll need experience of working in a demanding press office, and a clear understanding of how the national media works and what they want from a UK regulator’s press office.

You’ll be as comfortable dealing with a press enquiry from a national newspaper as planning how a documentary crew can film the execution of a search warrant.

We encourage creativity in communicating the ICO’s work and you’ll understand how to use and develop a wide range of communication tools to achieve your objectives. You’ll be expected to make recommendations to colleagues on the best way to reach their audience, take a lead role on communications projects, and be comfortable briefing and advising senior staff.

You’ll be educated to degree level, or have substantial work experience in the media or communications field.

The ICO is committed to equal opportunities in employment and welcomes applications from people in all sections of the community.
