Job description

The Institute of Physics (IOP) is seeking a Policy Manager for Wales to lead the design and delivery of a high-profile programme of policy work and engagement that will underpin key parts of the IOP's five-year strategy.

Working with colleagues from across the organisation and IOP members, the Policy Manager will spearhead the IOP's efforts to increase the visibility and impact of the IOP's policy work. The role will also serve to inform and influence decision makers and civic society in Wales. Key to this will be successfully building strategic partnerships and influential relationships with stakeholders from across and beyond the physics community, with the aim of fostering national debate and long-lasting societal and economic impact.

The role

This is a new role, reporting to the Head of Wales and working closely with the wider IOP Policy Team including the Head of Policy, and Policy Managers in Scotland and Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The post holder will lead, develop and manage complex and impactful policy programmes and projects at a national level; creating and supporting high level external engagement through an established network of policy contacts and an understanding of key priorities within the community.

They will need to build and maintain high level relationships within policy, business and academic sectors, to secure influence for the IOP’s policy work in Wales. Excellent communication skills are vital, and the ability to work in both English and Welsh would be an advantage. They will also require significant experience of writing policy documentation as well as ensuring key messages are delivered clearly with impact to relevant audiences internally and externally. Knowledge of the political system in Wales and a strong interest in science are essential.

The person

We are seeking candidates who are dependable, strategic thinkers with proven experience in the sector and excellent attention to detail. 

This is an influential role, requiring the experience and confidence to work with a high degree of autonomy, but also the ability to work with colleagues across the organisation. As this is a key role within a new team, the ability to manage the ambiguity that comes from a changing environment is essential, as is the ability to work methodically and establish processes and procedures where needed. 

We are looking for someone who has first rate communication skills, experience of leading and delivering successful policy projects, and a track record of building and maintaining relationships with senior internal and external stakeholders.
