Job description

The Accommodation Officer is a new full-time post helping to set up and run an exciting new project providing stable safe accommodation for women made destitute by the asylum system, as well as facilitating our existing hosting scheme providing short term placements for men and women. The post is offered initially on an 18-month contract, but is likely to be renewable.  This is a rare opportunity to be part of a project as it begins and to shape its direction, and to make a tangible difference to the lives of people who would otherwise be street homeless or living in unsafe situations as a result of the asylum process.

JRS UK works with around 350 destitute asylum seekers in the London area, providing a range of services in a holistic model. JRS has been providing temporary accommodation through our hosting scheme ‘At Home’ since 2012, facilitating short term placements primarily with religious congregations, and we are now opening a new 10-bedroom house in Stockwell, South London (Emilie House) specifically for women in need of more stable housing.  The Accommodation Officer will work closely with the Accommodation Manager to set the new project up and then oversee all placements in both our hosting scheme and Emilie House.

JRS works in a highly relational way, and the postholder will need to be able to form strong relationships with the people we support, who we call refugee friends. They will accompany the refugee friends that JRS houses or hosts and ensure that their holistic support needs are met whilst they are accommodated with us, engaging with staff in the destitution services and with legal advisors to facilitate a long term route out of destitution.

JRS UK is a Catholic organisation and our work is rooted in Catholic social teaching and imbued with the spirituality of the Jesuits. But we serve people of all faiths and none without proselytising or favour. Our staff and volunteer teams are diverse and include people from many different faiths, nationalities, and generational backgrounds. We particularly welcome applications from people with personal experience of the asylum system.
