Job description

Summary of main purpose of the role:

You will work alongside individuals in prison, delivering a creative arts programme to build confidence and develop positive relationships. You will also work with the chaplaincy team to deliver faith activities, as well as connecting individuals with Junction 42’s mentoring and employability work in the community.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • To deliver continuous structured, creative arts lessons to a group of up to 20 offenders, seeking to engage them in purposeful activities and develop their soft skills through these activities. A range of creative skills and media will be considered.
  • To work alongside other Junction 42 staff members and the relevant prison departments to deliver outreach and chaplaincy activities.
  • To deliver chaplaincy groups, such as running an Alpha or discipleship course.
  • To be responsible for referring relevant individuals through the Junction 42 resettlement programme for mentoring support around faith, employment and practical issues on release.
  • To facilitate and supervise staff and local volunteers in the delivery of Junction 42 activities within the prison.
  • To establish and cultivate relationships with those in prison as a positive role model ensuring a professional, approachable and mature attitude at all times.
  • To proactively evaluate Junction 42 projects and the overall effectiveness of the delivery suggesting operational adjustments where necessary and liaising with the Area Manager and the Head of Programming and Outreach to improve delivery.
  • To work alongside Junction 42 support staff to ensure the best possible services are provided to supporters, funders and those benefitting from our work.
  • To continue professional development in areas related to the post and in consultation with line managers.
  • To undertake any other tasks or duties that may be reasonably required.

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:

  • An arts-based qualification or significant equivalent experience.
  • Organisational and IT skills relevant to the post.
  • Ability to work and contribute as part of a team.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Conveys maturity, confidence and credibility to other professionals.
  • Possesses basic arts and/or craft skills.
  • Passion for using creative arts as a tool for engagement.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:

  • Teaching Qualification - the successful candidate will be expected to enrol for a teaching qualification if they do not already have one (the role is subject to being accepted on this course).
  • Experience in leading volunteers.
  • Experience of working with marginalised people, especially women.
  • Ability to drive with own transport.

This post has the following special circumstances:

  • The post holder will be asked to apply for prison security clearance (to counter-terrorism level) and a disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service. The role is subject to gaining the required security clearance for working in prison and a start date cannot be confirmed until security clearance is gained.
