Job Description

For the last decade Just for Kids Law has provided expert assistance to children and young people facing exclusion from school. Every day in England, around 35 children are permanently excluded from school. Excluded children are proportionally more likely to be in the care of the state, to have grown up in poverty, to have a special educational need and to suffer recognised mental health problems. The link between school exclusions and the criminal justice system is well documented.

Building on our years of expertise in this field, our new three year Strategic Plan sets out our commitment to securing wider reform in this area, with a combination of legal, policy and participation approaches. This project will engage children and young people aged 12–19 from London with lived experience of school exclusion to organise around and undertake social action on this issue to achieve change. The project will work with and be informed by a Legal and Policy Officer also focusing on school exclusions.

The post holder will have outstanding youth engagement and development skills and will gradually build from one-to-one engagement with children and young people, to small groups, to full groupwork, with a range of engagement activities. The post holder will build group identity, develop peer leaders to explore the educational, emotional and psychological impact of school exclusion and enable participants to confidently speak out on this issue. The post holder will support the group to set their own change targets and choose their method of influencing.
