About Kinmos

KINMOS provides support to people experiencing multiple needs within the heart of Kings Heath/ Moseley. We’re currently at a very exciting stage of our continued development and are looking to recruit volunteers who share our vision of an inclusive and supportive community where mental health and other needs don’t mean social isolation.

KINMOS is committed to the Recovery Model: a holistic, person-centred approach to mental health that puts individuals in charge of their own treatment with a view to recovery. We are committed to working in partnership with our members/service users to further this goal.

The Role

Along with other volunteers, you will be helping to motivate the attendees of our support group at Cambridge Road Methodist Church, encouraging them to participate in group activities and helping to point them towards other activities in the wider community. You will be a friendly face, engaging with attendees both as a group and one-on-one, helping to draw out those who may feel uncertain or shy and working to include everyone in the group.

  • Chatting to attendees and drawing them into conversation

  • Helping to serve hot and cold drinks

  • Motivating the group to participate enthusiastically in activities

  • Encouraging more reluctant or introverted individuals to join in

  • Helping individuals who require additional support

  • Promoting activities outside of Cambridge Road and introducing attendees to our new ‘buddy’ service that will help them to try out new things.

  • Accompanying the group or smaller groups on day trips and outings, helping to extend the ‘safe space’ feel of Cambridge Road to other areas.

Skills and Qualities

  • A friendly, outgoing and approachable manner

  • Patience and understanding of people who may be anxious, less talkative or have other needs

  • Good listening skills and openness to learning about individuals’ personal experiences of mental health issues and taking their lead on how best to help and support their needs.

  • Supportive and non-judgemental.

  • Experience or knowledge of the difficulties faced by people with mental health issues is helpful but not essential as training will be provided.

Other requirements

  • Adherence to our Equality & Diversity, Safeguarding and Data Protection and Confidentiality policies

  • Commitment to the ethos of Kinmos and the Recovery Model.

  • DBS check

  • We will reimburse travel expenses incurred during volunteer hours up to the cost of a Daysaver bus ticket or car mileage cost.

  • If volunteering exceeds 4 hours in a day we will reimburse up to £4 for a ‘meal deal’ on production of a valid receipt.
