Job description

We are Korea Future Initiative (KFI). We investigate and obtain the hard evidence needed to underpin future accountability on North Korea through comprehensively documenting current human rights violations, identifying alleged perpetrators, and exposing patterns of gross and systematic abuse.

KFI has been lucky during 2019/20 in being awarded some substantial and game-changing grants. We are looking to build on these successes by hiring an experienced Head of Fundraising and Communications to develop and execute an ambitious income growth strategy over the next 3 - 5 years.

Overall aim and objectives of the post

We are seeking an ambitious and experienced Head of Fundraising and Communications to help KFI grow from a small start-up into an effective, well-renowned self-sustaining organisation by consistently growing our restricted and unrestricted income year on year.

They will have a proven track record of raising funds from a variety of sources – including trusts and foundations, institutional giving, individual-giving, and/or major donors – and be able to identify and pursue new fundraising opportunities. The candidate will work alongside the CEO and Chief Strategy Officer and the Board of Trustees to develop and drive the strategic direction of KFI. They will manage and undertake all fundraising and communications activities conducted on behalf of the organisation.

This is an excellent opportunity to take on a challenging, yet highly rewarding role supporting KFI’s work for those with 7+ years of experience of handling complex and sensitive issues.


Job Description

  • Work with the CEO, CSO, and board of trustees to deliver the organisational strategy 2021 - 2024.

  • Develop, support, and implement the fundraising strategy to support KFI’s growth.

  • Develop, support, and implement the communications strategy to build KFI's brand.

  • Maintain a pipeline of donor prospects and develop proposals to secure significant one-off and multi-year funding for core and project costs from small, medium, and large trusts, foundations, and institutional funders in the UK and overseas.

  • Maximise income from existing and new major donors, trusts and foundations, and regular small donors.

  • Work with the CEO and board to develop individual-giving and major donor programmes, creating effective stewardship plans for all donors / funders and building long-term relationships.

  • Work with the CEO and CSO to build relationships with prospective funders. 

  • Prepare timely and accurate reports for funders and reports on fundraising and communications performance for the CEO and board.

  • Improve, establish and implement digital platforms, including website, as a basis for communicating with our key audiences as well as for a basis of growth in supporters,

  • Work with the senior management team to create robust cases for support.

  • Organise donor cultivation events and meetings to attract new supporters and keep existing funders updated as to KFI’s impact.

  • Oversight and execution of the delivery of communications - from social media content to print materials to branding to media relations.

  • Oversight and execution of the development and fielding of external media and press enquiries as appropriate

  • Securing funds to build and then manage a fundraising and communications team.

  • Develop and implement a Monitoring and Evaluation framework for fundraising and communications, including relevant KPIs.


Essential skills and experience

  • A minimum of seven years’ experience working in a busy fundraising and/or communications function either as part of a small team or part of a larger organisation.

  • Proven experience of securing substantial income from a range of sources, including grants from trusts, foundations, and institutions, as well as donations from major donors and individual-giving.

  • Experience of administering grants and partnership agreements

  • Demonstrated commitment to the values and mission of KFI

  • Experience of monitoring and evaluating the work of an organisation and reporting back to funders.

  • Knowledge of the human rights and/or international development sector

  • Experience of successfully fundraising from individuals, trusts, foundations and statutory bodies who support human rights and/or international development.

  • A track record of initiating and building relationships with funders

  • Strong communications, marketing and digital experience.

  • Experience of maintaining data records.

  • Demonstrated experience of designing and delivering multi-stream income generation/fundraising strategies from ground up for similar organisations



  • Are friendly with a positive attitude

  • Have demonstrable experience of producing high-quality written content.

  • Have a track record of working under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

  • Are highly organised, able to act on own initiative and meet deadlines

  • Are creative and confident in putting forward and discussing new ideas

  • Have the capacity to work collaboratively and constructively in a small team with an entrepreneurial feel
