LEAH is at an exciting phase in our development; the recently agreed 2022 – 25 strategy is focused on sustainability, collaboration, development, digital transformation, diversity and inclusion. The charity is developing a hybrid delivery model in the community, with plans to re-open community-based services alongside launching new services that respond to identified needs in our local communities.
LEAH has experienced a period of growth, having doubled our staff team across the last 3 years to meet demand for our services. During the pandemic all LEAH services were delivered remotely by phone or online video; our digital approach will become an integral part of LEAH’s ‘blended’ offer of support for clients for the future to address digital exclusion amongst LEAH’s client group. During the pandemic, LEAH grew responding to needs identified in our communities; we are delivering services across Hounslow, Richmond and Kingston as well as some services across London and beyond.
LEAH has been working for 40 years with ethnically and culturally diverse adults, including refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants, to support them to learn English. Having limited English can impact access to vital services, including housing, education, healthcare and finding sustainable work. We empower clients to become active participants in their local communities and access local services for themselves and their families. We work across Hounslow, Richmond and Kingston with some pan London and UK wide service provision that provide a stepping stone to employment, volunteering, other educational opportunities and other forms of community involvement.
When referred to us by our network of partners in the NHS, local authorities and voluntary sector, LEAH clients often find it difficult to speak to their GP or their child’s teacher and access vital services. LEAH clients are generally unable to attend formal English classes because of their status, caring responsibilities, poor physical and/or mental health, low confidence or illiteracy in their first language.
We provide the following services via volunteers to adults at no cost to the client:
- One to one English (ESOL) tuition in the client’s home or remotely
- A range of small-group classes in community settings and remotely, focused on a specific themes
- In Work ESOL programme for migrant workers with limited
- English Trips and social activities in the surrounding areas, e.g. heritage tours of Kingston, trips to Kew Gardens Information and support to access local statutory and voluntary services
Our services offer clients a means to overcome isolation and improve integration through improved English language skills, increased confidence and self-belief, and greater knowledge of local services and community life.
We are looking for an exceptional individual with strong strategic skills, experience of managing change and motivating people, self-motivated and with drive and initiative to develop and promote our strategy. The successful candidate will provide strategic guidance to the work of the Fundraising Manager and Manager and will have the communication and networking skills to promote our activities locally and nationally. Skills and experience of motivating and leading a virtual group of dedicated and committed individuals and a track record of finance management and developing sustainable services are essential.
To lead, manage and develop Learning English at Home, within its charitable objectives and vision which is to achieve inclusion through language. To sustain and secure new sources of income, to grow services. To ensure that the charity delivers high standards of delivery, with clear success outcomes. To promote the charity locally and nationally with funding organisations, potential partners, new volunteers and the public in general.
Organisational strategy and planning
- To work with the Board of Trustees to lead the strategic development of LEAH and provide leadership within the charity to implement and plan over the period of the Strategic Plan (3 years)
- Leads ambitiously to deliver the values, mission and strategic aims and plans what is required for the charity to deliver those plans
- To assess, manage and mitigate risks to the organisation in conjunction with the Board
People Leadership and Staffing
- To inspire, engage and motivate the staff and volunteer team
- Leads the staff to act as a coordinated high performing team which delivers the charity’s objectives
- Promotes and cultivates a culture centred on equity, diversity and inclusion; maintains a culture of kindness, learning, which protects staff well-being
- Ensures high performance through effective performance management, personal and professional staff development; encourages excellent performance from, and involvement of, volunteers
- To lead internal communications which are regular, 2-way and help focus the work of the charity with both volunteers and staff; develop communication mechanisms that enable a virtual team to be well informed, engaged and provide input to decision making
- Develops and ensures implementation of a marketing strategy and communications plan which raise awareness of LEAH’s impact
- Manages the Digital Inclusion Coordinator to ensure LEAH’s ‘digital spaces’ are inclusive and meet the needs of LEAH clients and volunteers
- Promotes LEAH to a wide audience and champions LEAH’s mission and activities with funders, donors, sponsors and other partners
External stakeholder relationships
- To be the lead spokesperson and ambassador for LEAH, to raise our profile with local authorities, the voluntary sector, health & wellbeing, education & employability networks as well as other agencies, general public and the media
- Develops productive relationships with existing and new stakeholders to maximise partnership opportunities and the impact of LEAH’s work
- Develops systems which measure client outcomes
Fund-raising and budgeting
- To ensure the development and implementation of a fundraising strategy and income generation plan
- Oversees the work of the Fund-raising Manager to develop new income streams and a broad base of funding with proposals that meet the requirements of funders. May lead on large or sensitive projects
- Responsible for service agreements, negotiating contracts and agreements; understands when consultation with the Board is required
- Ensures long-term sustainability through effective budget planning; monitors that the charity works to the budget agreed with the Board.
- Manages the contracted financial manager to provide reports to staff and the Board Monitors and signs off monthly payroll and pensions; ensures timely payments are made to staff
Governance and compliance
- To ensure high standards of governance including financial sustainability and control, legal and regulatory compliance and risk management
- Supports the Board of Trustees to ensure that they discharge their legal and regulatory responsibilities; provides quarterly reports to the Board on operational and financial performance
- Ensures that policies meet the expectations of stakeholders, are kept up-to-date and facilitate the work of the charity
