Job description

As the UK navigates a global pandemic, politics polarises, threats to our rights emerge from new capabilities and communities develop fresh tactics for collective action, Liberty stands ready to hold the powerful to account, lead the public conversation on human rights and empower people to understand and defend their rights and freedoms.
We are looking for a strategic, visionary and principled person to lead Liberty at this vital time in its 85 year history, while our Director, Martha Spurrier, is on maternity leave.
You will be responsible for nurturing and leading a strategic, inclusive and values-driven organisational culture, driving forward Liberty’s progressive agenda on diversity and inclusion. You will offer inspiration and direction to staff and influence at the highest levels of Government, in the media, among donors and in the NGO sector. You will lead Liberty’s Senior Management Team and work with the Board to achieve the organisation’s strategic goals and realise its mission. You will safeguard Liberty’s financial sustainability, monitor and maximise the impact of its campaigns, grow and diversify its membership, and champion Liberty’s brand.
The Interim Director will be a person of principle, vision and clarity of thought, defending and upholding Liberty’s values with passion and cogency. They will be an experienced manager looking for an opportunity to step up into a leadership role or an experienced leader committed to Liberty’s vision of holding the powerful to account and championing freedom and equality. They will have successfully devised and implemented long-term, strategic plans and used an expansive toolbox of strategies to achieve change. They will be an experienced campaigner with a gift for collaboration and a deep commitment to human rights and social justice.
They will understand the value and mechanisms of strategic communications and strategic litigation, mass mobilisation, campaigning and Parliamentary lobbying, as well as understanding how to fund and resource these activities. They will also be able to navigate best practice governance and financial management. They will be able to effectively lead a multi-disciplinary team; work very well under pressure; respond with agility and clarity to internal and external demands; act decisively; be a compelling spokesperson for Liberty; and take a reflective and evaluative approach to work.
