Job description

Liberty is a high-profile campaigning organisation that has been fighting for human rights and civil liberties for more than 80 years. We are independent and unshakeable. Our principles are guided by evidence and expertise – not political agenda, profit or popular opinion. We are not afraid to speak uncomfortable truths or challenge intolerance, injustice or abuse of power wherever we find it – but we always treat people with respect. We inspire and empower others to defend their own rights and the rights of their family, friends and communities. Together, we use our voice in courtrooms, in the news, on the streets and in politics to demand and deliver lasting change to benefit the many and the most vulnerable.

Liberty works on a diverse array of issues, including non-discrimination, migrants’ rights, protest, privacy, digital rights, free speech, police misconduct and access to justice. We are a uniquely multi-disciplinary team, working to achieve change through a powerful combination of lobbying, communications, strategic litigation, campaigning, member activism and providing free advice and information to the public. Liberty has been standing up for people and holding the powerful to account since 1934, and is needed now more than ever.

Liberty is currently recruiting an Advice & Information Officer to work as part of our wider Advocacy Team. Advice & Information Officers are responsible for producing public information resources on human rights law, processing and responding to requests for advice and assistance from members of the public, and identifying suitable queries to refer to our in-house lawyers. They are also responsible for the recruitment and training of legal volunteers and give talks in schools, community groups etc. on Liberty’s main campaigning objectives. The Advice and Information team is also responsible for managing Liberty’s legal clinics, including developing specialist clinics in areas which are campaigning priorities for Liberty.

The successful candidate will be legally trained, holding at the very minimum an LLB, GDL or equivalent qualification. Your research skills must be of a very high standard and you must have had some former experience of advice provision.
