Tower Hamlets Council is looking to recruit 2x Financial Support Officers to contribute to the meaningful work of the Tackling Poverty Programme. Tackling Poverty is a Mayoral priority and the programme was created to help alleviate the high poverty levels within the borough. The posts are being offered on a 1-year fixed term contract basis.
You will work with some of the borough’s most vulnerable residents to improve their circumstances. Using a holistic approach, you will identify all areas where support is required and where this support cannot be provided in-house i.e. specialist law advice, you will ensure referrals to appropriate organisations are made.
Using council systems, you will proactively contact vulnerable residents whom are identified as having rent arrears or being in financial crisis. You will have proven experience in carrying out income and budgeting assessments, and where gaps in benefit entitlements are identified, assistance to claim will be offered. This will predominately be Universal Credit and Discretionary Housing Payment applications but help to claim all welfare support will be offered. Knowledge of different financial and non-financial support options is required.
It is essential that you have experience in delivering advice and assistance in either benefits, debt or homelessness advice or a very similar discipline. It is also essential that you have a proven track record of providing beneficial 1-1 support to the vulnerable on a varying number of issues.
Occasionally we identify the opportunity for a benefit up-take campaign that we would like the financial support officers to lead on.

To identify and proactively support the most vulnerable households in the borough who may be experiencing issues such as risk of homelessness and debt using council systems.
To carry out budgeting and income maximisation assessments using the Benefits and Budgeting calculator and support households to make applications for Discretionary Housing Payments and other grants available.
To carry out a wide range of duties that support the delivery of the overall Tackling Poverty Programme

This is a fixed term contract for one year.
Willingness to work outside of contracted hours in the evenings and weekends subject to notice.
