Greater London
Voluntary, with expenses
Contract, Part-time
Job description

London South Bank University Students' Union is now seeking to appoint experienced and passionate volunteers to join the organisation’s Trustee Board - contributing to its future development, strategic direction and oversight at an incredibly exciting and important time; as the organisation seeks to embed a new five year strategy, as well as responding to the circumstances presented by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

As a Trustee, you will be a full voting member of the union’s Trustee Board that ensures the union has all the necessary governance, financial and structural stability and oversight to carry out its aims effectively. In particular, you will be contributing to major decisions on governance, legal, financial and risk based issues whilst also ensuring that the Union has an appropriate strategic direction and that its operations are being delivered well, and in line with its requirements, by the union’s Chief Executive, who is appointed by the board, on behalf of its members.

As a democratic organisation, governed by a collective constitution, the notion of student leadership and development is a key component of the union’s values and forms the basis of the union’s operating framework as a platform for students to learn, achieve and succeed. Since the summer of 2019, in partnership with the university, the union has also been undergoing a major internal transition - putting in place renewed and revitalised governance, compliance and financial foundations which will help it become a more innovative and engaging organisation over the next five years. The union’s focus going forward is driven from its new organisational strategy, designed around redefining the role of a students’ union in a modern university, and the union’s ambition and operations have been refreshed and restructured to provide a strong basis for future growth and development. Over the course of the next year the union is also due to become an incorporated charitable company, providing additional security and safeguards for its future stability and growth and added protection, on top of existing insurance arrangements, for all Trustees.

Enhancing the expertise, capability and reputation of the union, Trustees are recognised for their skills, networks and knowledge and appointed based on their potential contribution to the organisation during their term. It is not essential that you have prior knowledge of students’ unions, universities or London South Bank University specifically (apart from if you wish to act as an alumni trustee), and in some cases, is preferable as Trustees often bring a fresh perspective and constructive challenge and support to students’ unions and the way they traditionally operate. Nowhere is that more important than for us - where we represent and work for students at one of the most diverse institutions in the country.

Applying to join us as a Trustee

Our Trustee recruitment process is designed to help us find exceptional candidates with the understanding that you are busy in your day jobs, your responsibilities and everything else. We therefore will be in touch with individuals who match the skills and knowledge gaps of the union to organise an interview, but welcome the opportunity to discuss the role prior to the closing date of the recruitment to ensure that you are fully briefed on the requirements and ensure that we do not waste your time considering your application if the role isn’t for you. Similarly, the process is run by the union's Appointments Committee and final appointment to the role is dependent upon ratification (approval) by the organisation’s Union Council.

As an organisation, we would also welcome discussions about reasonable adjustments that any individual may require whether that is about the recruitment process, on commencement or throughout their time with the organisation as a Trustee, and are particularly welcoming of applications from candidates of diverse backgrounds and encourage applications from those of Black, Asian and an ethnic minority backgrounds, as people of these backgrounds are traditionally under-represented at this level within the students’ unions governance and leadership team and we believe that the organisation should reflect the people and communities that it seeks to serve.
