The iconic Macmillan Nurse has been a symbol of support for those affected by cancer in the UK since the 1970s. Last year, our Nurses and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) reached over a million people living with cancer, providing effective and innovative services to improve their quality of care.
Macmillan is currently looking to appoint a new Chief Nurse to be a strategic leader and visible figurehead for all our Macmillan Nurses and AHPs, of which we currently fund or support 7,500 nationwide. This role is absolutely critical to ensuring that Macmillan achieves its ambitious strategy of helping everyone with cancer live life as fully as they can.
About the Role
Reporting into the Chief Executive, the Chief Nurse will act as the executive and strategic leader for Macmillan’s nursing and AHPs workforce. This includes defining and implementing a strategic approach to ensure Macmillan’s workforce strategy is robust and that the voices of our nurses and AHPs are recognised at the highest level. This role will strategically advise the Executive team and the Board of Trustees on topics relating to nursing and AHPs.
Recognising both the present and future considerations for the delivery of care, the Chief Nurse will be strategically responsible for the ongoing development of our nurses and AHPs, as well as supporting the testing of new initiatives at Macmillan. Furthermore, they will support cross-functional influencing activities, providing specialist, strategic advice to the wider organisation, such as to Policy and Public Affairs & Campaigns.
Vitally, the Chief Nurse will continue to build and maintain Macmillan’s external reputation as a thought leader and expert in this space, representing the organisation among key stakeholders, on relevant steering groups and promoting our agenda and views through media activities, conferences and other external channels. This role will play a key role in the national debate around nursing and AHPs across the UK.
You are an outstanding strategic leader, with a first level nurse registration, who can bring proven post-registration experience at Board and preferably national level. You are comfortable working autonomously and are familiar with acting as a clinical expert to executive levels.
Acting as an internal and external figurehead, you bring a strong network and have held senior positions that have seen you utilise exceptional influencing, engagement and stakeholder management skills. You are a strategic thought leader, who has had demonstrable success in complex and matrix working environments, driving forward change and clearly articulating the present and future needs for the delivery of care. You are passionate about being a voice for Macmillan’s nurses and AHPs.
Macmillan Cancer Support is one of the largest charities in the UK. Last year, we raised £247 million in order to provide physical, emotional and financial support to people living with cancer across the UK. In 2018, Macmillan individually supported 1.9 out of 2.5 million people living with cancer in the UK, and we continue to endeavour to reach those, as yet, unsupported communities and individuals.
