About the Team

This interim role reports to the Director of Communications, Policy and Campaigns (CPC), alongside other Assistant Directors.

The CPC team drives Shelter's campaigns for social housing and renters' rights, supporting our services and income generation efforts.

You'll manage heads of important content and engagement teams, driving strategic direction and collaboration across functions.

About the Role

As Assistant Director Communications and Content, you'll lead Shelter's communication efforts, ensuring impact, reach and a coherent organisational voice.

You'll oversee media teams, drive cross-channel campaigns, and develop ambitious communication strategies. With your experience in matrix management and project/change management, you'll guide teams to achieve our strategic goals amidst organisational change.

About You

We're seeking candidates with extensive experience leading and managing media and communications teams, along with a track record of developing impactful cross-channel campaigns. Your ability to navigate complexity, build collaborative relationships, and drive strategic change will be crucial in this role.

An exciting opportunity has arisen at the National Housing Federation (NHF) for an interim Head of Member Relations to ensure that our members are at the heart of what we do. Working in a team with two other Heads you will lead and manage our member relations team of 8 External Affairs Managers, plus our member intelligence and business support teams. You will work closely with colleagues in Public Impact taking a lead on ensuring that our influencing strategy and policy positions reflect our Housing Association member priorities.
The NHF is the voice of housing associations in England. We are the trade body to almost 600 housing associations, who have grown from philanthropic roots to provide 2.6 million homes to around 6 million people.

Key elements of the role:

- You will shape our strategic engagement with members to ensure our external influencing and policy positions reflect their priorities, working collegiately with colleagues in the Public Impact Directorate.
- You will lead programmes of work, aligned with organisational priorities, leading teams of people from across the organisation.
- You will ensure member satisfaction and member risk is understood, monitored and managed effectively by the member relations team and wider organisation.
- You will work with colleagues across the NHF to ensure that the organisation’s resources are used to deliver agreed offers to cohorts of members, and exceptional service for all members.
- You will manage the work of at least two External Affairs Managers, the Member Intelligence team and the Member and Business Support team as agreed with the Executive Director.

The successful candidate:
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

- Strong knowledge and understanding of the housing sector and the issues facing Housing Associations.
- Knowledge and experience of establishing and maintaining relationships with senior customers and stakeholders demonstrating credibility, diplomacy, effective communication and negotiation skills.
- Clear leadership skills, able to lead complex programmes of work effectively, both through direct line management and matrix management.
- Ability to manage budgets effectively.
- Excellent analytical skills and ability to summarise complex information effectively to aid decision making.
- The ability to manage and motivate a high performing team.

About the team

Our Finance Department works as a team of experts to safeguard resources and support decision making across Shelter. We strive to ensure Shelter is financially sustainable in order to achieve our vision of a home for everyone. This particular role sits within the Financial Planning and Analysis team. We support the charity through financial reporting, analysis, and expert advice, and enable collaboration to support managers in making effective business decisions.

About the role

Joining a finance team that collaborates and communicates effectively to help us deliver our mission and vision, making vital business decisions that are driven by expert knowledge and financial acumen will be key to your success here. As part of the role, you’ll engage regularly with our Assistant Directors and their leadership teams to ensure that financial results and key messages are shared and you’ll support stakeholders in engaging with fully available financial insight and reporting.  When it comes to our stakeholders, you’ll support and lead finance education and training to equip them with the skills required to execute their own financial responsibilities.

Among your many challenges will be the need to align financial plans to operational and strategic plans and make sure they’re clearly understood by Business Units. Seeing that each Unit is provided with a channel of effective, two-way communication with Finance will be important too. You’ll also work with colleagues in Project Governance and HR Business Partnering to support Directorate planning and business cases, as well as supporting and leading on the delivery of cross-team projects.

About you

As well as being suitably qualified (or in the final stages of qualification), you’ll need to be used to working effectively with non-finance stakeholders and varying your communication style to suit the audience you’re addressing. You’ll be experienced in assessing financial risk, and able to produce insightful financial analysis. You’ll also need excellent organisational and time management skills, including the ability to work to deadlines and reprioritise tasks when necessary.

Excellent analytical skills, impeccable attention to detail, a high level of numeracy and intermediate Excel skills are all ‘must haves’ too, as is proficiency in the main Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook and Word. Additionally, it would be an advantage if you have experience working in a Charity and have associated experience of managing restricted funds and fundraising.
