Avon Wildlife Trust are looking for a Head of People and Resources to shape the development of our workforce and ensure that our staff and volunteers have everything they need to fulfil their roles.

Like many organisations, we have recently moved to a hybrid working approach including homeworking and operational hubs throughout our area. We have embraced collaborative online working through Microsoft Teams and are making the transition to fully cloud based IT systems. We are operating effectively in our new model, but much remains to be done to ensure that staff and volunteers are supported by the best systems and facilities that we can provide. The Head of People and Resources is a new role in the Trust, introduced to help make and maintain this transition. You will also support the operation of our Board and the governance of the Trust.

Overall Purpose of Job :
To manage the people and resources operations of the Trust, ensuring that our staff, volunteers and Trustees are supported by the systems, facilities and culture they need to fulfil their roles safely, effectively and inclusively.

Main Responsibilities :

• Develop our HR systems to attract, support, develop and retain talented people, including leading our systems and culture around equality, diversity and inclusion, performance management, volunteering, learning and development and internal communications. 

• Provide oversight and supervision of the Trust’s buildings, operational facilities, vehicles and other shared assets, ensuring that our people have the facilities and equipment they need to fulfil their roles. This includes the landlord responsibilities associated with Folly Farm Centre.   

• Ensure the effective development and maintenance of IT systems and infrastructure that supports our digital transformation, knowledge management and effective functioning of the Trust’s day to day operations.  
• Continuously develop the Trust’s Health and Safety, safeguarding and data protection systems, monitoring and driving compliance to provide assurance of a safe environment for people involved in the Trust’s activities. 

• Continuously develop systems to support the Trust’s effective operations, including project management and resource management systems, and monitor and report on implementation of the Trust’s Strategy Delivery Plan. 

• Support the effective governance of the Trust and the operations of the Board, including organising and supporting meetings, co-ordinating our annual report and AGM and managing the recruitment process for new Trustees.  

• Support the Trust’s procurement and contracting processes, including commissioning legal advice.

• Continuously improve the environmental footprint of the Trust’s operations, to go beyond net zero carbon and address the ecological impact of supply chains.

About Us:

Thank you for your interest in our Country Manager role. ROLDA (Romanian League in Defence of Animals) is a small animal welfare charity working to improve the lives of dogs, cats, and other animals in Romania and internationally. Since its establishment in 2006, ROLDA has become a beacon of hope for the millions of vulnerable stray animals in Romania – one of Europe's economically poorest nations. Our mission is to manage the homeless animal population, estimated to be millions, through six key focuses: rescue, rehabilitation, sheltering, sterilisation, and education. Within our shelters, inspired by British kennel design and maintained to meet EU animal welfare standards, we can house up to 700 stray dogs at a time. Here, they receive complete veterinary care, rehabilitation, and preparation for rehoming. Since 2006, we have helped over 48,000 animals (primarily dogs and cats) and built two shelters for dogs and one for disabled and senior cats. We also distribute support, primarily through small grants, to six other charities in Romania and over 40 shelters in Ukraine. We rehome mainly in Switzerland, Sweden, and the UK. In addition to our efforts in rescuing and rehoming animals, ROLDA tackles the root cause of Romania's homeless animals through comprehensive neutering programmes and educational initiatives. Since 2006, we have successfully neutered nearly 20,000 cats and dogs, significantly impacting Romania's severe overpopulation of animals.

Job Overview:

As the Country Manager, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the growth and impact of ROLDA in the UK. This is a remote position (for now) that requires strategic thinking, people management skills, financial acumen, and a commitment to achieving our organisational objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategy Development:

Collaborate with the Board to develop and implement growth strategies for the organisation.

Drive initiatives such as increasing adoptions, fostering programmes, volunteer engagement, and support fundraising activities.

Support Fundraising Manager with income generation growth

Research and Insight:

Represent the charity externally and liaise with other charities, including other ROLDA branches.

Stay informed about industry trends, research, and insights to inform organisational strategies.

People Management:

Empower and develop the small operational team, including volunteers providing leadership and necessary resources for successful completion of initiatives.

Support the recruitment of volunteers.

Foster a positive and collaborative work environment and strong relationships with stakeholders.

Manage and evaluate team performance, providing guidance and feedback as necessary.

Maintain effective communication with the UK and international team of ROLDA and its partners, collaborators.

Financial Management:

Develop and control operational budgets to ensure adequate resources for meeting ROLDA’s objectives.

Problem Solving:

Find innovative solutions to complex problems, adapting strategies to overcome challenges.

Policy and Procedure Development:

Create, develop, and manage operational policies and procedures.

Legal Compliance:

This interim role reports to the Director of Communications, Policy and Campaigns (CPC), alongside other Assistant Directors.

The CPC team drives Shelter's campaigns for social housing and renters' rights, supporting our services and income generation efforts.

Internews seeks an experienced Project Director for a four-year European Commission (EC)-funded project to advance the global response to increasing the resilience of at-risk independent media. The Project Director will lead and manage a consortium of four international NGO and academic implementing partners, overseeing and coordinating the design and implementation of a diverse portfolio of activities in multiple countries worldwide, as well as project monitoring and evaluation and a robust learning agenda. Strong skills in project financial management and communications are required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

· Lead the Inception Phase of the project, working closely with consortium members, the EC, and other awardees to finalize target country selection, select research initiatives, draft the project workplan and monitoring and evaluation plan, and determine country-based activities.

· Serve as Internews’ primary point of contact with the European Commission, establishing and managing strong partnerships and dialogue with EC representatives in Brussels as well as country-level delegations.

· Effectively manage the project consortium, ensuring transparent communication processes and protocols.

· Pro-actively coordinate activity design and management with Internews Regional and Thematic Directors who manage Internews programming in key geographic regions and technical areas.

· Provide strategic, operational and representational assistance to ensure that activities are meeting their goals and targets, recommending program adjustments when necessary to keep the project on track;

· Regularly travel to London and Brussels, as well as target countries, for project and donor management purposes;

· Cultivate and strengthen relationships with local partner organizations and ensure that implementation is responsive to the needs of partners and beneficiaries;

· Track and report project progress and activities monthly against work plans;

· Oversee program monitoring and evaluation to ensure effective implementation and to measure activity impact;

· Working with the Monitoring and Evaluations specialist and team, ensure a robust learning agenda and deliver a learning symposium at project’s end with the consortium and EC.

· Maintain a thorough knowledge of key issues affecting independent media (print, broadcast, digital), and a general understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing independent media globally;

· Ensure the project is in compliance with all grant and cooperative agreement rules, requirements and regulations as well as with Internews internal policies and procedures;

· Serve as the primary budget authority over the project, responsible for ensuring all costs charged to the project are allowable, reasonable and correctly allocated;

· Accept fiduciary responsibility for all funds advanced for the purpose of the project;

· Understanding of and demonstrated commitment to upholding Internews’ Core Values.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage and oversee all project staff.Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS

· At least 10 years of experience in media and program development, including senior-level management of personnel and financial administration;

· Donor grant management experience with EU funding and wider donor experience is essential;

· Professional experience in the media sector is an asset; experience managing assistance programs supporting media and/or civil society required.

· Experience as a manager or trainer with professional capacity-building programs for journalists and media outlets an asset.

· Demonstrated knowledge and experience in some or all of the following areas:traditional, digital, and social media; media and internet law and policy; information disorders/ disinformation; and/or sustainability models for media;

· Excellent soft skills, including diplomacy, interpersonal and communication skills, with a problem-solving attitude and as a self-starter who works both independently and as a collaborative team player;

· Willingness to travel regularly to London and Brussels, as well as target country visits;

· Additional language skills are a plus;

· University degree or equivalent experience.

Our Finance Department works as a team of experts to safeguard resources and support decision making across Shelter. We strive to ensure Shelter is financially sustainable in order to achieve our vision of a home for everyone. This particular role sits within the Financial Planning and Analysis team. We support the charity through financial reporting, analysis, and expert advice, and enable collaboration to support managers in making effective business decisions.

About the role

Joining a finance team that collaborates and communicates effectively to help us deliver our mission and vision, making vital business decisions that are driven by expert knowledge and financial acumen will be key to your success here. As part of the role, you’ll engage regularly with our Assistant Directors and their leadership teams to ensure that financial results and key messages are shared and you’ll support stakeholders in engaging with fully available financial insight and reporting.  When it comes to our stakeholders, you’ll support and lead finance education and training to equip them with the skills required to execute their own financial responsibilities.

Among your many challenges will be the need to align financial plans to operational and strategic plans and make sure they’re clearly understood by Business Units. Seeing that each Unit is provided with a channel of effective, two-way communication with Finance will be important too. You’ll also work with colleagues in Project Governance and HR Business Partnering to support Directorate planning and business cases, as well as supporting and leading on the delivery of cross-team projects.

About you

You’ll also need excellent organisational and time management skills, including the ability to work to deadlines and reprioritise tasks when necessary.

Excellent analytical skills, impeccable attention to detail, a high level of numeracy and intermediate Excel skills are all ‘must haves’ too, as is proficiency in the main Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook and Word. Additionally, it would be an advantage if you have experience working in a Charity and have associated experience of managing restricted funds and fundraising.

• Work with members to platform collective action for climate and nature, celebrating what people are doing to drive more action & surface the public mandate for political support for more of this

• Work to translate collective action into a new vision and narrative on climate and nature

• Support the coalition and wider movement to achieve greater impact through coalition working, strengthening the climate movement

JOB DESCRIPTION

• Lead the convening of members and community organisers to co-create, facilitate and deliver the Climate Coalition’s people-centred campaigns, projects and programmes, ensuring strong engagement from members and contribution to movement-building

• Lead creative coalition campaigns to mobilise the public at scale, and demonstrate the public mandate for change 

• Oversee the development and delivery of placed-based convening in key locations: Project Groundgame

• Work with members and partners to develop projects and initiatives that support collective action 

• Work with members, partners and allies to harvest, catalogue and platform stories of collective action in a way which makes the case for systems change

• Build strong relationships with members and the wider movement, understanding how coalition work can help achieve their objectives

• To play a leadership role within the Secretariat team, and line manage other team members

ESSENTIAL

• Exceptional leadership skills, with significant experience of facilitating effective collaboration and coalition-building 

• Significant understanding and experience of using a suite of influencing tactics to build power and create campaign impact, including both mobilising and organising tactics

• Experience of using public engagement campaigns to affect change

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with demonstrable experience of building and managing relationships with a diverse range of partners and allies 

• Strong time management and organisational skills, with the ability to work well under pressure

• A sophisticated understanding of the role of civil society and social movements in driving political, social and economic change

The Role

This is a new role that will lead both our institutional fundraising and influencing work. This role will be responsible for raising significant funds from a range of institutional funders. This role will also lead on the development of a new influencing strategy to inspire funders and organisations in the disability and development sector, to increase funding for disability justice and to fund organisations led by people with disabilities directly.

Finally, this role will also ensure excellent stewardship of our existing strategic investments and partnerships.

Person specification

This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about disability justice and disrupting traditional funding approaches. It would be a great opportunity for someone interested in transformation in the International Development sector with a commitment to shifting power and resources to organisations led by people with disabilities.
