Head of Charity Grants (Maternity Cover)

  • Full time, Twelve Month Fixed Term Contract
  • £56,350 - £61,322 per annum (depending on experience) plus pension, medical and dental insurance
  • 25 days holiday (plus 3 additional days to be taken between Christmas and New Year)
  • 4pm finish on Fridays
  • Hybrid work pattern – minimum of 3 days from the office, maximum of 2 days at home.

The Masonic Charitable Foundation is seeking a Head of Charity Grants (maternity cover) to take responsibility for their Charity Grant’s programmes at this exciting stage of the department’s growth and development. The post holder will lead on strategic direction of the department and support the Grants Manager with overseeing the Team to deliver the varied grant programmes.


This is an excellent opportunity to join an efficient team who are currently embedding a new application process to enable them to become a more responsive funder within the sector. The post holder will have the opportunity to help shape, deliver and monitor this new application process at a very pivotal point in development. Furthermore, the post holder will be a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) working closely with this group and other leaders within the organisation, Grants Committee, Trustees, members and other stakeholders to implement a new strategy from 2022.


The role is varied and will involve seeking out strategic opportunities to help the MCF to reach the most disadvantaged in society and ensuring the delivery of Charity Grants activities are in line with the MCF KPI’s and values. The day to day accountability includes the development and management of a grants team, budget analysis and reporting, relationship management and operations, including the appropriate tracking of grant applications, award decisions, grant payments and grant outcome reporting. The post holder will recommend changes to grant scheme eligibility and criteria as required and will use best practice and evidence-based learning to guide good governance and process in quality assuring the grants function. There will also be some travel nationally to monitor and assess charities as well as to promote MCF and the Charity Grants programmes to donors and other stakeholders.


The current MCF Charitable Grant programmes include: Children and Young Person support, Older Person support, Medical Research, Hospices and occasional disaster relief grants. The successful candidate will have knowledge and experience of two or more of these areas.


To be successful in this role it is essential to have significant experience within the third sector and have a background in grant-making. The candidate is required to have extensive people management experience, along with the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including experience of working with Boards and Committees. They will be required to have strong report writing skills, excellent verbal and written communication, including presentation skills, and the ability to complete analytical assessment and research on grants. There is also a requirement to have an understanding of Charity finances and accounts.
