Medact supports the health community to work together towards a world in which everyone can truly achieve and exercise their human right to health. Climate change is a public health emergency, damaging the health and lives of millions of people around the world. Many of the communities which are suffering most from the impacts of Covid-19 are also those whose health and wellbeing is hardest hit by environmental damage.
The Coronavirus pandemic is forcing Governments to rethink national and global economics. As the UK Government moves to develop a recovery package, it’s vital the progressive movement comes together to ensure a socially-just recovery which centres human and planetary health. Health workers have a uniquely powerful voice, and a strong will to make a difference - there’s an exciting opportunity to bring large numbers of people together to campaign in ways which will have real impact.

About the role
The Climate & Health Campaigner leads Medact’s programme to support health workers to campaign for just and proportionate action on climate change, working closely with our Climate & Health Organiser. In spite of - or perhaps because of - the Coronavirus pandemic, there is huge energy among the health community on climate justice issues. The role includes holding Medact’s key knowledge base on climate justice and health and requires building strong relationships across the health community, from establishment institutions to frontline workers.
This isn’t an entry-level role, but you don’t need to have had a job in an NGO before or be a professional campaigner to be right for it. You might have worked with your local community or other group to campaign on a climate justice issue you care deeply about. You’ll be a strategic thinker with a strong understanding of power, and know how to work with others to create pressure for change. You need to be a great communicator, able to build trusting relationships with frontline health workers, academics, partner organisations, and community groups alike - and you’ll have an eye for a good media story and know how to get it out into the world.

If your application is shortlisted, we will invite you to an interview. Interviews will involve a presentation, for which we will ask you to prepare in advance; a written task; and a conversation with a panel of interviewers.
We are happy to reimburse shortlisted candidates for travel costs; childcare costs; and lost wages incurred as a result of attending an interview.
