Medical Aid for Palestinians
London, Greater London (On-site)
Unpaid role
Part-time, Temporary
Job description

Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) works for the health and dignity of Palestinians living under occupation and as refugees. We deliver medical and humanitarian aid in an impartial manner to those most vulnerable and at risk, while also developing local capacity and skills to ensure the long-term development of the Palestinian healthcare system. Our overarching goal is to improve the health and promote the well-being of Palestinians, strengthening the capacity of local partners.

We are an international, non-governmental, independent, non-political, non-religious charity that has worked towards this goal for nearly four decades, delivering health and medical care to those worst affected by conflict, occupation, discrimination and displacement. Working in partnership with local and international organisations, UN agencies and academic institutions, MAP addresses a wide range of health issues and challenges faced by the Palestinian people.

Our vision is of a future in which all Palestinians can access an effective, sustainable and locally-led system of healthcare and the full realisation of their rights to health and dignity.

Alongside our work on the ground in the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem, and Lebanon, we are also committed to bearing witness to the injustices caused by occupation, displacement and conflict. We speak out in the UK and internationally, and ensure Palestinian voices are heard at the highest levels, to press for the political and social barriers to Palestinian health and dignity to be addressed.

As our Treasurer steps back from the Board after nearly 10 years with us, we are seeking a new Treasurer to join MAP in 2022.

The responsibilities of the Treasurer include:

  • Chairing the Finance Committee;
  • Maintaining strong relationships with the Chair, Chief Executive and the Director of Finance, acting as a sounding board when required;
  • Maintaining an overview of MAP’s financial affairs and ensuring they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice;
  • Monitoring the financial health and stability of MAP;
  • Overseeing the maintenance of proper financial records and procedures, as well as the production of necessary financial reports and returns;
  • Ensuring that the charity applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives;
  • Ensuring that MAP maintains a strong Risk Management framework with appropriate risk mitigation procedures;
  • Providing advice and information to the Trustees on their financial stewardship responsibilities, acting as the leading interface between Trustees and management on financial matters.

The new Treasurer will be an individual of exceptional calibre who can guide and enhance the strategic development of MAP. They will demonstrate the following:

  • Significant experience of strategic financial leadership;
  • Demonstrable experience of working at Board level;
  • Breadth of experience having oversight of various operational functions including IT, HR, Legal, Governance, and Compliance;
  • Strong understanding of charitable governance structures;
  • Empathy towards the main aims and purposes of MAP;
  • Inclusive and collegiate approach to Trustee-ship and Committee Chairing.

Experience of leadership in a charitable or public sector context would be particularly beneficial.

MAP is committed to equal opportunities and encourages applications from anyone who can meet the criteria, regardless of gender, race, age, disability, sexuality or religion.
