Job Summary

Mental Health Innovations (MHI) is a new digital charity, who run the Shout Crisis Text Line. We use innovative technology to make mental health and counselling services more accessible and highly scalable. We use a sophisticated chat platform, machine learning algorithms and a CRM system to manage the onboarding of volunteers. We use Apple and Chromebook devices and our systems are cloud-based.

We are a new, rapidly-expanding organisation, operating with a start-up culture. We are now looking to consolidate our growth in a way that maintains our ability to deploy technology quickly and react to end-user requirements. As a processor of special category data, security is one of our priorities. 

This is a new position due to the rapid growth of both the organisation and the IT and Security Department. The IT Engineer will work to develop and run our IT and security services. You will also be expected to be technically-minded and get hands-on when required. The role will be highly varied and you will be expected to stretch yourself into new areas to support the team. The role will be central to building out and supporting our cloud infrastructure.

Main Duties

  • Technical support and maintenance of all services.

  • Working with the team to identify and develop service improvements and/or new services.

  • Building and supporting the data pipeline and analytics environment.

  • Proposing technological solutions and where agreed, proof of concepts and MVPs.

  • Performing technical activities on projects and changes.

  • Maintaining and developing the MHI websites.

  • Change, release, incident and problem management

  • Contributing to cyber registers, documentation and audits

Skills/Qualifications (E=Essential; D=Desirable)

  • (E) Knowledge of coding concepts and structures. 

  • (E) Experience in one or more of the following: 

    • Bash scripting, linux, ssh keys 

    • Python

    • AWS EC2, S3, IAM, VPC, securing access

    • Infrastructure security and best practices

    • Working knowledge of encryption technologies, TLS

    • Knowledge of high availability architectures

    • Monitoring and troubleshooting

    • Databases and SQL

  • (D) Hands on in one or more of the following:

    • Nginx or Apache 

    • Ansible

    • Cloudformation or alternative

    • Jenkins

    • Java

    • Javascript, node, react

  • (D) Good University Degree (thinking skills valued over subject)

  • (D) Exposure to ITIL (ITIL Foundation or higher preferred)

  • (E) Experience of working in an IT Support team

  • (D) Knowledge of high level security concepts

  • (E) Excellent documentation skills

  • (D) Working knowledge of one or more of these tools/products:

    • Salesforce

    • JIRA

    • Mac/iOS

    • GMail and GSuite

Location: Due to the current circumstances, this is a work from home position until we return to business as usual, when the role will be based in our London office.
