Job description

For over 70 years Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) has been bringing help, hope and healing to some of the world’s most remote and poorest communities. With over 650 staff (operating in over 15 countries worldwide), we are passionate about using light aircraft and other technologies to bring physical and spiritual transformation to isolated people in Jesus name.   

We now have a new opportunity for an experienced international leader to join our Executive Leadership Team as the Chief Operating Officer (COO). This role will be based in Cairns, Australia.

As COO, you will report to our Chief Executive Officer, and take on the responsibility for leading the delivery of the operational strategy, safety and sustainability of MAF International’s field programmes, the Aviation, Quality, Safety and Security departments as well as providing leadership to our Cairns support office.

You will also provide spiritual leadership and pastoral oversight according to the beliefs and values of MAF to inspire and encourage the multinational/multi-cultural team to flourish. 

In addition, you will continuously develop, implement and maintain our overall strategy of operations ensuring both long and short-term objectives are set and resources focused to deliver desired results.

The ability to cultivate strong, collaborative partnerships that lead to greater impact and effectiveness will be essential. This will include developing successful relationships with partners, regulatory authorities and country officials in our programmes. 

Finally, our organisation operates within a highly regulated aviation industry, you will need to ensure all operational activities are carried out within approved regulatory and operating guidelines at the same time as managing the annual budget by monitoring internal control systems and taking corrective action where necessary. 

To be considered for the role, you will need to be educated to at least degree level or have equivalent experience and or training. You will have previously held a senior leadership role and managed a multi-disciplinary team on an international level.

Cross-cultural management, mission and aviation industry experience will be critical for any applicant to thrive in this position. Your skills will lie in thinking strategically and tactically. You will be a self-starter, analytical and a team player who is results orientated.

This role includes responsibility for guiding, inspiring and motivating staff to grow spiritually in line with the ethos and beliefs of MAF. Accordingly, you will need to have experience of leading, mentoring and growing a Christian team, including leading prayer and biblical reflections, and be passionate about sharing God’s love with remote people.
