Job description

My charity client is looking for a Junior Database Administrator will work with the Database Lead and be responsible for:

  • Management, maintenance and administration of databases (and 3rd party application databases) providing third line support upgrades and updates to databases and database applications
  • Knowledge management and knowledge transfer
  • Formal change control, configuration management
  • Formal problem management, knowledge management and release management

Main Responsibilities

  • Database administration
  • Monitor database performance and query throughput
  • Review, develop and maintain maintenance plans to ensure systems perform efficiently and effectively
  • Plan, test and implement database systems installation and upgrades.
  • Maintain and administer database security access
  • Regularly review logs and security logs to ensure the good performance safety, security of database systems, following best practices
  • Automate processes and improve efficiency of data management processes
  • Database and application support
  • Trouble shoot and resolve database connectivity issues
  • Follow Problem Management processes to troubleshoot and resolve recurring issues.
  • Develop and maintain the application knowledge database ensuring changes are updated and communicated
  • Work closely with the Database Developer and assist with deployments of new code and application releases
  • Respond to third line support requests and ensure service levels are maintained
  • Share knowledge of known issues, resolutions, maintenance schedules and common database tasks with the Systems Analysts, ensuring the Systems Analysts are fully supported
  • Implement processes and controls (technical and non-technical) to improve the performance and reliability of the database
  • Liaise with 3rd party suppliers on SQL / database issues.
  • Deputise for the Database Lead on occasion when required

Essential Knowledge / Skills and Experience


  • Sufficient experience in database administration and IT service delivery (third line support)
  • Microsoft SQL 2012 or later experience essential
  • Administering Microsoft Windows Server

Understanding of the following technologies or ability to learn:

  • MySQL, DynamoDB, IIS 7
  • AWS EC2, CloudFront, SES, Elastic Cloud, CloudWatch
  • Demonstrable understanding of the principles of networking and internet technologies


  • Microsoft SQL certification (MCSA) or ability to work towards this
  • ITIL Foundation or ability to become qualified ITIL practitioner
  • Professional industry membership or willingness to obtain this
