Location:           Petersfield, Hampshire (with some travel within UK and overseas)

                           The role is full time, although four days per week would be considered with salary pro rata

ROLE DESCRIPTION

Mosaic Middle East (MME) is the operating name for the UK registered charity, the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East. It is a Christian charity with an annual income of around £800,000 which aims to bring hope, help and healing in the Middle East.

After five successful years leading the organisation, Mike Simpson will be retiring in the autumn and we are looking to appoint an Executive Director with a passion for the charity’s work and with the skills and character to build an effective team based in the UK and in the Middle East. The charity’s trustees, drawing on their knowledge and experience of the region, have developed a strategic plan for the charity. The Executive Director, who will be based at our headquarters in Petersfield, Hampshire, will work closely alongside a dedicated and experienced team of Senior Managers, as well as a new Regional Manager based in the Middle East, to deliver that vision. In the next stage of the charity’s development, the trustees are seeking to shift influence towards input from the Middle East and focus the headquarters on coordination, advocacy, research and coordination.

This role will involve some travel both within the UK and overseas. The right person for the role will bring positivity and a focus on and accountability for delivering the charity’s aims. We believe that as the charity further demonstrates the difference it is making in the lives of people in the Middle East, our supporter base will grow and enable even more of this important work to be delivered.

As a charity, we support Christian refugees and other religious minorities who have suffered at the hands of sectarian violence. MME currently works with NGO and church partners in Iraq and Jordan, including St George's in Baghdad. We provide displaced and vulnerable communities with relief, including food and accommodation assistance. MME also funds employment opportunities and various educational and health related services. Our reconciliation work focuses on grassroots initiatives designed to build understanding across religious and ethnic divides, encouraging respect for others and affirming positive co-existence.

The role includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Coordination and planning

Reporting to the MME Chairman, you will contribute to the planning and coordination of the charity’s activities, including meetings of the Board of Trustees and oversight of the charity’s four sub-committees, which are:

Core Services

People Management

Communications, Advocacy and Revenue; and

Strategy and Operations

Coordination of staff management

Line manager of four senior managers and oversight of the management of all MME staff and contractors in accordance with charity’s values and UK employment legislation. To strengthen teamwork.

Strategy and operations, monitoring and evaluation

Co-lead with the Regional Manager the implementation of the charity’s strategic plan and the development of a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation framework for all projects and service delivery. Reporting regularly to the Board of Trustees on MME's activities and progress against the strategic plan.

Relationships with key stakeholders

Including the engagement of and relationships with Patrons, major donors, UK NGOs and other partners, supporters and volunteers.

Crisis Management

Oversight of the management of any crises in accordance with a regularly reviewed crisis plan.

Profile

You will thrive on the challenge of planning and coordinating multiple, complex aspects of the work of MME into a highly effective and sustainable charity, meeting the needs of Christian and other persecuted religious minorities in the Middle East – as in creating a beautiful mosaic.

This Executive Director role will be ‘first amongst equals’ in the senior management team, working closely alongside and empowering them in their roles, as well as with the Chairman and the Trustees. You will have excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrable experience at building teams that are cohesive, effective and fulfilled. You will have a heart for the people the charity serves and the strategic thinking to deliver charity’s aims in a complex environment. You will be a strong communicator with people from all backgrounds and cultures.

Ideally, you will bring knowledge and experience of leading a development charity or be able to explain why your background means that you are capable of all aspects of the role. You will understand the many functions within the charity, including finance and reporting, budgeting, best practice, IT, governance, human resources, operations, projects and programmes, monitoring and evaluation, advocacy, research, communications and income generation. You will bring energy and enthusiasm, motivating the team to give their best.

You should ideally have experience in development, reconciliation and relief, as well as advocacy and representational skills. You will either have existing knowledge of the region, its culture and operational context, or you will be interested and a fast learner. You will be committed to partnership working and enabling the voices of those in the Middle East to shape the work.

Experience, Skills and Values Required

  • A minimum of three years’ experience in senior management or organisational leadership
  • Experience of working with committees or boards
  • Exceptional leadership and organisational skills with experience of managing multiple tasks and prioritising effectively
  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent
  • A personable and warm personality, with the ability to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders
  • Strong financial skills, including budgets, financial accounts and reporting
  • Flexible and dedicated approach to work
  • Highly accurate and excellent attention to detail

Preferred:

  • Knowledge and experience of international development
  • Experience of leading an international development charity
  • Knowledge and experience of the Middle East
  • Arabic speaking or a willingness to learn
  • A relevant Masters degree
